Default 2004 Z06 air intake

I'm considering buying an 04 Z06 air intake for my stock 04 vette. Would it improve air intake quantity and performance? I don't want to have to cut or modify anything so I want to stay "stock". Just wondered if the design and air flow charateristics would be an improvement. Great forum, keep it up. Thanks.

Not sure you'll notice much...it's just a larger air inlet opening on the airbox lid. I would try to find another one like yours and just cut a larger opening yourself...many threads on this. Some say its worth about 5hp.

Just take the lid off and ziptie it. Someone dyno'd before and after and made 12rwhp. Not sure if it's true, but it's free and definitely better than a zo6 lid...

The larger opening on the 2002-2004 Z06 air box cover will definitely increase air flow, and also be perfectly stock looking too.

It's a simple 15 minute installation.

My friend cut a large hole in his air box--he said in 3rd gear the car fish tailed so bad that the rear end past the front end-

Is that because the hole mod gave him 100 more hp, or because he was screwing around?

To the OP. Just get a blackwing (no permanent mods), and keep your stock intake on a shelf.

If you don't mind a little DIY work you can cut your own opening. I don't know you'll get much unless you open up your vents where the fog lights go. I saw a vendor that had just the cover with a cut out in it I am pretty sure it was under $100 and West Coast Corvettes sells the fog light vent cut outs with screens for ~$85.

OP said he didn't want to cut/modify anything; that's why he was asking about the Z06 airbox/airbox cover. I just put a Z06 cover on my
2003 Coupe, and if Jim (Quicksilver vert 01) can do it in 15 minutes he is a better man than I. Hell, I spent 15 minutes just cursing those damn little Torx bolts with insufficient recesses that hold the cover down. Getting a bit down in there, and seated in those shallow recesses well enough to break loose the factory-overtightened bolts was a struggle.

Don't expect to feel any power increase. If you want to go a step further and gain most of the benefits of one of the aftermarket cold air intakes without losing the stock appearance, buy new fog lamp shrouds or remove yours, mill out elongated holes in the upper (horizontal) surfaces on the sides away from the lamps, and reinstall. That shoots outside air up into the airbox area, plus cools your engine compartment a tad as well. Can't see anything has been done unless you lay on the ground and squint upwards to see the holes. Use restraint in choosing the size of your holes/slots--don't make them so big you compromise the structural integrity of the shrouds nor impinge on mounting holes.

You didn't have to remove the Torx head mounting studs. The rubber grommets in the air box should just slide right over them.

Thanks to all responders. As ususal good cross section of answers and opinions. My interpretation of the responses no material increase in performance. I'll save my money for a better exhaust system, improved sound and performance.

I guess the Z06 design engineers must have increased the air box cover opening size, starting in the 2002 model year, purely for cosmetic reasons.

Take a look at the 2000 model airbox cover. There's no hole at all. The Z06 has the largest of all of them, and it's still pretty small. Haltech or blackwing for my money. The air bridge is pretty bad too, on the stock intake.
