I just installed a vortech and i have noticed that alot of people have oil catch cans installed rather then a pcv. Is it really worth switching it up and how will it help my engine perform??
If you have the engine at high RPM's a lot, you have a lot of oil blowby that would normally end up sent back into the intake to get reburned. Catching that oil keeps the upper part of your engine clean (intake and valves) and an added bonus, the oil does not get burned so the air is cleaner too.
Oil catch cans are very important to LS engine owners. Here is the setup I use:
Here is a picture of the oil that is caught by both catch cans:
One can is attached into the PCV line and the other can is attached to the line coming off the valve cover.
It is important that the can attached to the valve cover has its inlet higher than the outlet on the cover. If it does not, oil will siphon out of the valve cover quickly filling the can.
If you are looking for a performance gain - you will not find that out of an oil catch can. But if you have ever removed the heads and intake manifold and seen all the oil that can go through the intake, you will appreciate the job of the catch can. They are relatively cheap, can be made to look nice, and simple to install. Just drain them when you change engine oil.
Most of us do not remove the PCV and as you will read, it serves a vital function. The addition of a good catch can in the right location will prevent oil from accumulating in your intake and carbon from forming on your pistons.
