Default Differential shatterd

hey guys, well lucky me was just cruising down the highway and went to shift into 6th and then heard a big pop. The wheels locked up and then broke free. When I got it over to the road I found the rear had exploded and cracked the case. Well got it all apart and this is wha it looks like. pics http://s794.photobucket.com/albums/yy228/red2001z06/ Found out that my transmission is locked when it when into gear and does not turn and cause the rear to explode. I disassembled the rear and the posi unit seems fine. I wanted to know if and how much would the posi unit be worth to sell? Also any one got any ideas on why the trans would just lock solid?

Here are some reason the trans would lock up:

-seized bearings (the roller bearings WELD itself to the main shaft)
-snap ring failure (the gears are helical cut so there is thrust on the gear when power is put through it. When the snap ring holding that gear fails, the gear is pushed and can weld itself to what ever is next to it)
-broken part lodged between 2 gears

My guess, from your post is that your rear went first and damaged your transmission since you were shifting from 5th to 6th gear. The last two gears share the same cluster, so I have to believe all was well, before you shifted.

Not to much value in the rear-end parts, except for the axles if they are any good. You're kind of lucky that "ragtopws6" and you live close together.

I would drop him a PM as he rebuilds these and might be able to help you out.

Yeah it sounds like something with the cluster jammed. If I put the trans in neutral then the main shaft turns. I already purchased a t6060 setup out of a c6 z06 that I'm putting in. Might pull it apart and see what happen with it.

I have one of those T6060 set-ups myself that I had left over from my last project car. I just ordered some coil overs and LPE tub kit that I am going to do at the same time

You'll need the Pfadt off-set differential mounts and C6 Z06 cradle too.

I have seen the plastic fork pads broken/fail on 08 Z06 with less than 30K miles on it. It was at my work.

The pads are the same ones that T56 uses (1-2; 3-4 fork pads) so you can upgrade them to the bronze fork pads. The TR6060 has a smaller (narrower) sliders since the gears are wider to handle more power. In doing so, the engineers added more engagement teeth to the sliders to compensate. These little suckers are very sensitive to missed shifts. I replaced 2nd gear/blockers/slider on a 09 Z06 with 1,800 because the owner missed ONE shift to 2nd when he was running 1/4 mile. Did the same on a 2010 Camaro for the same reason.

Here are some pics to wet your appetite.

Sintered bronze blocking rings. They are not as smooth as carbon fiber blockers from T56 IMHO.

This is from a 2010 Camaro with 1,200 miles. Guess what happened? Owner was racing and missed 2nd.

So what gets damaged the blocker ring, synchro, keys or the fork pads ?

Kind of surprised that a missed shift would do all this damage

Hope it was covered by warranty

Yeah how bad is the damage when one of them goes? And how much would kit cost to replace? starting to sound like I spent all this money for a trans that could break from a mis shift ha.

Since the engagement teeth are smaller, the are 30% so more of them to have the similar area of contact. The teeth were chewed up (the sharp end was rounded) and the sintered bronze blockers were worn down.

When I drove the vehicle in the shop, the 2nd gear grinded shifting at 2,000 RPM.

It was covered but the trans will not be covered in the future.

I didn't mean to scare you but I don't know if the owner didn't know how to shift since this occurance is not common. Also, the stock Z06 clutch isn't the best for drag racing. There are alot of members do drag race their C6 Z06 without any issues.

Blownbluez06 has the C6 Z06 TR6060/diff and he puts down over 900 at the wheel. He really gets on the car and have not given him any trouble.

Yeah, that's why I bought the TR6060 after talking with Bret and his good experience with it.

I'll probably go with a SPEC 3+ and billet steel flywheel. I'm not into drag racing but I wouldn't mind a few high speed pulls.

Ok awesome cause I got the setup from bret(blownbluez06) and was talking to him about how much he liked it. Yeah I'm running an rps twin so hopefully the clutch problem should be good ha.
