Getting ready to install a new rear axle after having removed the old one and I have a couple questions. Should the c clip that holds the axle to the output shaft be installed in the axle sleeve or should it be placed in the groove of the output shaft? How much force should be used to get the axle locked in place? Any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated!

Just curious....where was the c-clip on the halfshaft you removed?
I would leave the clips on the half shafts coming out of the diff. Put some oil on this area & inside of the hollowed spline of your new shaft. It will slide right up to the diff. Good luck.
I have seen that write up. That's a great read and photo detailed instructions for beefing up a C/5 diff to C/6 innards. Unless I'm missing something, that is not what the op is in the process of doing at this point. It does however show a picture of the clips in place on the diff, after completion of rebuild.
I did see that write up also and I agree it is a great piece of work. I did see the clips in place on the shafts but still uncertain how to install. There is no mention in the service manual but some people are telling me install new clip into the axle sleeve.
I have a diff out in the garage w/ the clips still on the diff shafts. I could go out to the shed where I have an extra axle and see if it slides on that way, with no problem?
