Default C5 Convertible Left Quarter Panel Removal

I searched and found some "it's pretty easy" posts. But no step-by-steps or pictures. Does anyone know of instructions to remove the left quarter panel on a C5 convertible? Thanks in advance. John

I'm assuming you mean rear quarter panel rather than the fender? Its a pretty complex write up with loads of pics so too long to post up

PM me with your E Mail and I'll send you a copy in a word doc.

I would like this too, I know I am coming to this thread late in the game but I am hopeful that you still have the document hanging around. I am going to be replacing my QP this weekend after a great guy on the forums came to my rescue helping me out of a jam with a correct color QP for my vert when it was backed into by a really nice person that didn't bother to leave a note with their insurance info.

Default Instructions

So I never got a reply to this post but decided to do the work this weekend and see if I could make it work. As luck would have it I got it done (less the side marker which will be in the mail today). I will give you some instructions below, I didn't take pictures but it really is quite easy.

1) Jack rear of the car, remove wheel (for easier access)

2) Remove 4 screws under gas flap (7 or 8mm I think) to separate fill tube from QP

3) Remove 1 screw (7 or 8mm I think) that sits near the gas flap hinge

4) Remove 5 screws along the top of the QP (T10 screws) (3 under trunk lid, 2 under tonneau)

5) Remove 3 screws along the door jamb of the QP (T10 screws)

6) Remove 1 screw located at the front of the wheel well that holds the lower corner of the QP in place with relation to the wheel well liner

7) Remove 1 screw attaching rear wheel well for access to the remaining lower QP bolts

8) Remove rear tail light (2 T10 screws) for access to remaining upper QP bolts

9) At bottom of QP reach into opening by pulling back wheel well (tight squeeze) there are 2 bolts (10mm I believe) positioned vertically, no need to worry about the nut holding it, it is integrated into a mounting on the body

10) Reach into the opening where the tail light was and remove 2 bolts (10mm I think) near where the top of the QP meets, they are positioned horizontally, again the bolts are integrated so no worry about anything falling off and getting lost

11) Finally remove 2 nuts (again 10mm if I recall correctly) they are positioned horizontally and are about 1/3 and 2/3 the way down the panel, the nuts are on the inside of the panel toward the front of the car, the bolts that it threads onto are fixed into position so again do not worry about them getting lost.

At this point the QP will be completely undone from the car so you will need to wiggle it out. Now that you have the QP off you will need to transfer the fuel fill flap, it is held on by 2 screws (7 or 8mm I think). The only thing that you will need to make sure to do (I didn't notice this so I had to remove the QP to and start over). The body panels are tied together by 2 metal plates that run along the inside of their panels that pinch the 2 panels together. They attach to the panels by sliding into position with a couple of 'hooks' (not describing it very well but you will see them and it is very easy to figure out). Make sure to transfer this plate to the new QP, I didn't the first go around and noticed that I didn't have a place for the bolts to thread into.

When reattaching the new QP I started with the fuel fill spout as this has some 'give' to it. Once the 5 screws (4 for the fill spout and 1 near the hinge) are tied in I loosely threaded the top 5 screws and the 3 in the door jamb. I then went to the upper bolts/nuts accessed through the tail light, followed by the lower 2 bolts. Once I verified that the rear cap and QP lined up properly (pretty hard for them on to) I tightened down the bolts/nuts/screws, replaced the tail light, the 2 screws that hold the wheel well, my wheel...then off the jack

Even with my mistake of not transferring the plate that ties the two panels together, and having no instructions this only took me about an hour to do.

One note I will make, I did not replace the side marker (I just got it in the mail today) but this is held in place by 2 nuts from the backside, the easiest way to access this is by removing the rear tail light, there is lots of room to reach in, remove the bulb and unscrew the marker.

Hope this helps out!

I cannot say for sure because I did the work on my vert, however, from everything I have come to learn recently there are a few differences. For instance the FRC(ZO6) and Vert have the same QP, while the base/fastback has a different QP. The FRC however has a couple hidden screws that require glassing in after installation so it is not a simply bolt on and go proposition. The best advice I can give on this is to do what I did...I had the replacement QP in hand and took a few minutes to study it and noted where the bolt/screw holes were along the edges. Since I knew where the holes were I could locate the bolts on the car. Since I knew I could access them all I knew I could get the panel off and the new one on. I would suggest the differences you will find will be along the top edge of the panel where it meets up with the back glass. I would figure that the bolts along the jamb, bottom and where it meets up with the rear end will be the same.

Good luck
JP
