Default spark plug cups??

I'm thinking of replacing plugs soon. What's up with the plugs? Are they necessary? Are they there to help with heat? It sems as if they may be a PITA to get back in some of the tighter places. Has anyone gone without them? Any difference in anything if left out?

Thanks

If you are not joking with your question and if I'm not misunderstanding, your engine will not run with out spark plugs. They are in fact somewhat of a challange to change. How many miles on the current plugs?

U must be writing about the metal plug caps. I have been running without them for the past 80,000 miles. I have the Magnacore wires and long tube ceramic coated headers. You just need to make sure the plug wires don't get too close to the exhaust manifold or headers. Some guys are running the plug wire socks, But I don't see a need for them if you watch your clearances.

I think he is talking about the metal cups around the boots? I like the heat protection for the boot myself.

are you talking about the metal shields around the plugs?? If so, yes they are there to keep heat from the exhaust off the plug wires. They are not difficult to put back in when changing the spark plugs. Or you could go with some Kool Sox that are very easy to install (thats what I have with headers)

Yep, I was talking about the metal cups around the plugs "heat sheilds" is the better term. It was late at night (for me) and "cups" was the best term that came to mind at the time. I see that I wrote plugs instead of cups now. I was tired last night.

Thanks for the heads up about going without da cups. I'm bone stock, no headers, and was wondering about the PITA factor putting the heat sheilds back in with new plugs in a few spots/cylinders.

When I changed the plugs and wires with stock Delco ones I re-used the heat shields and dont recall it being any problem. ( i am pretty sure the new wires didn't come with new heat shields)

The metal plug shields are easy to transfer and it's a nice peace of mind item.
