Default HUD does not bright/dim automatically

It used to work . imagine driving on a bright day & you pass thru a dark tunnel it's supposed to dim & then brighten up when you exit the tunnel.

I recall there was a sensor on the hud circuit board that needed fixing.

Anyone know where those old links are or where you can buy the cb or send one for repair?

THX

During the day, the brightness of the HUD, DIC and HVAC are controlled by a light sensor on the top of the DIC controller. It looks like a clear LED there. Its not really replaceable other than replacing the DIC controller itself. Yes I had one fail therefore they do go bad.

Are you positive? I thought the hud had it's own. All my other dic/hvac/radio/ etc lights seem fine.

Anyone remember that old thread that had a pic of the hud circuit board with an arrow pointing to the sensor on the board?

I have been told there is a guy or two that do repair on these, but I have no contact info.

HUD does not bright and dim on it's own. It appears to do so due to the ambient lighting. That's why there is a separate dimmer control for it.........

Guys,

Read the bold part, from the owner's manual.

The HUD has it's own built in sensor, IN ADDITION TO THE DIMMER ON THE DASH.

Below:

Quoted from c5 owners manual

To adjust the HUD so you can see it properly:
1. Start your engine and slide the HUD dimmer
control all the way up.
The brightness of the HUD image is determined by
the light conditions in the direction your vehicle is
facing and where you have the HUD dimmer control
set. If you are facing a dark object or a heavily
shaded area, your HUD may anticipate that you
are entering a dark area and may begin to dim
.
It is possible for sunlight to enter the HUD causing
all of the graphics to light up. The display will return
to normal when the sunlight is no longer entering
the HUD.
2. Adjust the seat to a comfortable driving position.
If you change your seat position later, you may
have to re-adjust your HUD.
3. Press the top or bottom of the DISPLAY switch
to center the HUD image in your view.
The HUD image can only be adjusted up and down,
not side-to-side.
4. Slide the dimmer control downward until the HUD
image is no brighter than necessary. To turn HUD
off, slide the switch to OFF.

The sensor on the cb has been a known weakness for some time. I guess a LOT of c5 HUD owners are driving around with broken sensors on the hud.

Thanks for the posts

If this is the case, then mine probably isn't working either. I always have to adjust my HUD for night/day use. It's been that way since I bought the car though. I just assumed it wasn't automatic.
My HVAC lights have been very dim sometimes during the day. Could this be related?

My understanding is that the hvac/radio/etc is all on a different system. Of course the hvac "lights" really don't have to be that bright during daylight & they are adjustable with their OWN dimmer to left of steering wheel.

You should be able to test the automatic hud sensor on a bright day by setting the hud "dimmer" to 1/2 way & then drive the car in/out of a darkened garage. The hud should brighten & dim noticably as you drive in/out of bright daylight.

I feel this is sort of a safety feature. Say you are driving on a bright day & hud is max bright & then you drive into a very dark tunnel. GM would not want to require the driver (going say 80 mph) to reach forward & fumble around & try to dim the (now) TOO BRIGHT hud. Hence the automatic feature.

I will post more as I persue this.

Most dealer techs don't know how this is supposed to work.

Oh, I'm sorry...you are correct. It has its own sensor too for daytime driving. Its located in the center, looking straight out forward at the top, inside of the HUD and thank you for sparking my memory on that.

I've owned mine since new in 2000 and never once noticed the HUD dimming. Screwing up totally in direct sun many times. I guess either I'm old (yep) or the difference between dim and not dim is very very minor. Thanks!

Here is an old link (for the doubters) that explains it all.

Go to post #13 & click on the link that takes you to a Pontiac (RIP) forum & READ.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...-question.html

I am thinking I'll pull mine & see if that sensor came loose.

Quite true, GM would prefer that you speed up to 100mph and head to the nearest dealership for repair!

We have 2 winners Choreo & rebelheart!

I figure about 30% to 35% are broken, 50% guys don't notice/have it turned off/never read the manual and the rest are working as they should & driver knows how his car should function.

You all have a great weekend.

It's located in the center top dash vent isn't it? I believe the one on the right is the sun load sensor for the AC and the other is for the HUD.

Mine dims automatically during the day so I'm a lucky fella!!

Follow the link on post #14. I am talking about the one ON the circuit board. The one you are referring to is ANOTHER sensor, probably for other purposes besides the HUD, I am not sure as I have not researched on that one.
