I have a pretty good floor jack, but noticed that it wouldn't get it up all the way recently! I figured that it needed oil although I havn't noticed any leaks. Had it about 7 years. I have heard of "jack oil", but heck who has some laying around when you need it?? In any case, I added some brake fluid and all seems well. Is this a potential problem? What's the difference?? Thanks!

Brake fluid will ruin the seals and the jack could potentially fail. You must use Hydraulic Jack Oil that can be purchased at any auto parts store.
I've used a little brake fluid to soften the seals on a leaking jack .
I wouldn't think of it as a permanent fix though.
Generally speaking , ATF is a better choice if hydraulic fluid is not available.
Brake fluid is not a good choice
Right thanks! I will get the proper fluid, although I can undstand why ther is a diffenence in the effect on seals. There are seals in a brake system too for instance. Right?
