I think I will go with the 3.42. Now I will have to watch the forum, corvette recyclers, and Ebay to find the right one. Thanks for all of the responses
If your going to the trouble swapping gears. Also swap the low stalling stock converter while your car is apart. A hi stall T/C like the Yank SS3200 or SS3600 will make a HUGE difference in performance. Excluding nitrous a hi stall T/C is the most bang for the buck in an A4.

I have RPM 3:42's, RPM Level IV Transmission & a Yank SS3200. Car has great street manners and yet when you step on it it's like lighting a rocket!
A stock 2.73 auto is a hopeless slug. Before I learned anything about C5s, I rode in a pristine auto C5 and it was so slow I truly thought something was wrong with it. That same car later had a 3.42 gear put in it with requisite tuning, nothing else done, and I could hardly believe it was the same car. Before the gear swap, I raced him with my newly-acquired C5 manual and walked away from him. After the swap he could usually beat me, 'tho it was more a case of me struggling with that miserable C5 manual shifting than his car actually being quicker--when I did manage to hit the gears right I could edge him out.
With that said, I think the 3:42 is the perfect choice for you. You may lose 2 - 3 mpg (city), negligeable (hwy). That is what I experienced when I did mine. I also added a mild Yank 2800 stall converter just for that extra little kick in the *** on "take-offs".
Thanks for the post and I believe you. I dont want to spend two grand for just 2 tenths.
I do understand your reasoning for not doing it. I will add though that the extra torque that you'll get from the 3:42's can be enjoyed when leaving every stop, not just the strip.

Thanks again for the information. I found the part on GM Parts House. I like your suggestion. That's what I will do with mine next. I will keep you posted on the result.
