That's what I thought through the years but the places I have tried evidently don't do it right because the front tires are starting to cup again and they don't have that many miles on them since replacing.

Is cupping common on C5s? A newbie wants to know.....
Flynhi...........I have had the Vette since new and it has been a problem.....The bad part is once they cup you basically are stuck until you get new ones unless you get them shaved....that is why I was sure to have it aligned and pressure balanced the tires when I bought the new ones. It only has 56,000 miles on it and 7000 on the new tires. I am going to try again and have them use the ZO6 specs this time........they are just starting to cup so I hope I can at least slow down the process.
I talked with a tire shop manager about this very thing only a month ago. He said that cupping is a pretty common thing on all cars. Proper tire pressure and alignment can help slow cupping, but it is always likely to happen. It only becomes an issue, however, when you have wide, directional tires that cannot be rotated (exactly what most of us have on our Corvettes). Without the ability to rotate, the cupping only continues to get worse with more mileage. It doesn't really hurt anything, but it certainly looks awful and contributes to road noise (this is part of the reason so many people comment that new tires are quieter than what they previously had). For these reasons he suggests many buyers will be happier with non-directional tires that can be rotated side to side.
If your tires are wearing evenly (aside from the cupping) and your car handles well, your alignment might be fine. You could always consider upgrading to Z06 wheels and tires so that you can rotate side to side.
I called to get an alignment because I lowered the vette. called the tire shop I usually deal with (knowing they do a lot of work with vettes and m3s) to ask how much. he asked what kind of car I have and when I said a vette, he said, "Uh, $120...$150." I told him the sign in his shop says $89 (I was there getting a flat repaired a couple weeks ago and knew I needed the alignement so I was sure to check). He said okay, I'll do it for that. I just had to laugh...corvette tax hopefully there will be no crying once they are done with my car.

And you still went there knowing he tried to rip you off?

Exactly my thought.
I'd have been visiting the shop... to talk to a manager.
Side note: Network Alignment on 61st Ave / Bethany Home Road. I've been going there since the late 80's. They aligned one of my other cars, which is lower than any Corvette, ever. Those guys are good.

I asked the shop to set it to factory and they didn't tell me otherwise when I picked up. seems good so far. going on a road trip tomorrow with the wife so we'll see.
