Tracking down a P0442 code vacuum leak

I've got a 2002 (5,000 miles) automatic with the dreaded small vacuum leak code. I've messed with the gas cap, looked fine but replaced it anyway. No good,...code returned. I decided to order a vapor canister purge valve and replace it on the next rainy day. Well, only problem is I can't seem to locate the valve on the car. Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I might find it. If I can't see it easily, I'm guessing it's not a simple swap out,....can anyone comment on the change out process?

Got code today and idling is all screwed up. What did you find with yours?

Sorry Waddisme,
I haven't gotten around to swapping out the valve yet. I can say the code however does not appear to effect my engine performance. I'm pretty sure my leak is on the fuel tank side, and not in the engine bay.

check under drivers side fuel rail cover...there is a small EVAP hose connection that may have worked loose or is cracked....that was the source when I got this P0442 code

Checked that last nite. It all looks good. Pulling intake tonite to see if there is a crack there. It is a FAST so who knows.

have you tried the starter fluid detection trick before tearing things apart?

I got the P0442 codes and now I have a serious gas fume problem in the garage after a fill-up. Car goes to the shop tomorrow.

By the way, this code has been appearing quiet often and the dealership has replaced the fuel cap and told me in the past that it was no big deal.

The present fault with the severe gas fumes is a big deal.
