I'm interested in buying a salvaged Corvette LS1 pullout for a project truck. Is there any specific year(s) to look for or to stay away from? Thanks, Mark Franklin,TN
all are great and strong engines. 2001 and newer had several revisions which added horsepower and torque;
LS6 block (pretty sure)
ls6 oil pump (pretty sure)
different cam,
LS6 intake,
different heads (maybe)
revised exhaust manifolds
etc were all added to the LS1 in 2001.
In March 2001, the coated pistons were introduced. These made it into some 01's but definitely 02. In the second week of production for the LS1 in 02, and all LS6's in 02, the motor's got updated rings with higher tension to alleviate the oil usage issue seen in prior production. I would shoot for a mid-02 or newer myself with 04 having all the updates before the switch to the LS2. My friend's 04 had the later LS2 timing chain.
Thank you for the info. My dad give me his 1980 LWB Silverado recently, he ordered it the Fall of 79'. I plan to repower with the LS1/700R4, remove bed,cab, replace interior,etc. There seems to be a few more LS1's around and the money is a little less than an LS2. I'm sure I'll have more questions once this project gets in full motion toward end of the year. I want to aquire the high ticket items first.
premium recommended for best performance and fuel economy. but it will run on regular just fine.
I moved from an area that sold 93 to an area that sells 91 at best. I lost a couple mpg's in the process. I can't tell any noticeable loss of power, but I probably took a small hit there too.
