Within the past 2-3 weeks my a/c compressor (01 c5 vette with 72k miles) has started to make noise although it is STILL COOLING just fine. (like a bad bearing or something).yesterday the mechanic thought possibly it could be the drive belt/tensioner is worn out. he replaced both serpentine belt and a/c belt along with tensioner. compressor still make noise. I am getting estimates from 850 to 1000 to replace the a/c compressor. Is this the average? Is my compressor going out? If so, does it hurt to keep using until it finally quits working or should I stop using it and take it in?
Has anyone else had this experience. Your help/info is very much appreciated.
It's a video of my compressor before it went out completely. I ended up replacing it myself. Check out the write-up.

Rocco, nice write up! Alos, I am planning to start my compressor change tomorrow morning and by following your write up. I already have all the parts necessary but I was wpnndering if it is absolutely necessary to pull the water pump? Also, I have long tubes. Will I have to remove the passenger side header to remove the compressor?

I don't know if there's enough room to get the compressor out with the water pump still attached. Another forum member told me that he tried to remove the compressor without first removing the pump, but that he ended up having to remove it anyway.
As for the passenger header, I'm not sure...I had the stock manifolds at the time and they weren't in the way.
I have a 2000 and had the same problem a few weeks ago, only mine didn't make any noise, it just stopped. I got my compressor replace for about $650, but because it ran until it died, it clogged the system with "burnt" gunk and I had to replace the condenser also. (to the tune of another $250). I didn't do it myself, but watched the mechanic do it and he removed the thermostat housing but did not have to pull the water pump.
