Cooling fan # 2 inoperable
My #2 cooling fan isnt coming on with the hotter temps not when the AC is turned on. The relay was switched out and the fuse is OK. The fan isnt frozen up. I can spin it with my finger. Any ideas, possibly the fan motor has kicked the bucket? Only 42000 miles on the car. What does a new fan cost?

Here are some things to think about. Both fans operate whether in the low or high speed fan mode. When the fans are on the low speed setting the relays connect them in series which cuts the voltage across each one in half thus reducing the speed. Depending on the type of failure only one fan would run or neither of them would run. For example, if one fan opened that would open the circuit for the other fan. If one fan was frozen it might have enough voltage drop across it that the other fan wouldn't work either. If a fan was shorted so there was no voltage drop across it then the other fan would run at full speed.
In the high speed setting the relays connect them in a parallel arrangement and if one fails the other will work.

There are three relays in all. So each needs to be checked and as Bill already stated, they are both supposed to run together. Based upon the relay switching will determine if they are in series or parallel. FYI, the fan grounds go through or connect at the ground pack located at the right forward frame rail directly adjacent to the hood riser.
