i have a 1999 driving down the road and the car just shut off. tried to start it and fires then shuts right down, it did this several times. also the low oil level light comes on but its right where it should be on the stick. the next day the car started right up and ran fine but today it did the same thing agian. any ideas
nothing else came up, but that sounds about right. sometimes i have to turn the key on and off a couple time to get the radio to come on and the key fobs wont hold a program for more than a few min.
Yeah, sounds like a problem with the switch for sure. The fobs are a different issue. About the fobs, they appear to have a lifetime. Some have been able to resolder the contacts of a small black 4-pin device inside and it came to life again. Others have simply replaced the battery. Still more have had zero luck and nothing worked. Those of us ended up buying new ones and usually from Gene Culley.
My car was doing the same thing. Except my display said service steering column lock. The car was at Speed Shop so it was pulled into dyno turned off steering column lock in my computer. I have a replacement module on way. I am driving around with service steering column lock. If you need more info I can give you their email.
The Steering Column Lock Recall thread is at beginning of this Forum. You can get various syptoms. Such as car turning off at over 2 mph or message to pull key etc. The fob mesage . I have those three. It is a good thread. You need to get car to shop quick before it stops workingor leaves you stranded. I was lucky my went while at shop going to dyno. So it was pulled in temporaily fixed till part comes in.
pulled ignition and cleaned contacts, they were very dirty. but problem is still there.
The low oil level message, in conjunction with the engine shutting off, concerns me. The oil level sensor and the fuel pump relay both receive a ground from SP122 under the battery tray. In all fairness, the O2(s) heater circuit is grounded there as well.....so I would expect codes for the O2s if it were bad. SP122 is in turn, grounded at G105. If nothing else seems obvious, you might consider inspecting G105, SP122, and taking resistance measurements.
