Has anyone tried any products to protect their paint at high speeds? I'm looking for something to protect the paint on the drive to Fort Stockton (from Dallas) and during the Big Bend Open Road Race. We'll have a tech speed of 140 mph during the race, so we'll probably be above 135 mph for fairly long stretches in the straights. I talked to Ed at Cleartastic and I think his product would work well for to protect from rock chips around the wheels, but I need something for the hood and nose. Is a Speed Lingerie bra my best bet? BTW, the car is a 2000 NBM C5 Coupe (MTI LS6 Z07). Thanks!
I know people on other forums who have used Speed Lingerie at those speeds. When I used mine on the C4, because of someone I know who had a problem with wear where it wraps around the wheel well, I used to put in a strip of felt during installation to help further protect that region. The tightness of the wrap around at that point held it in place, of course I never tried it at those kinds of speeds.
I was watching Motorweek on TV yesterday and they were discussing a 3M product currently being marketed. It is a clear stick on coating (probably similar to cleartastik) that is fairly invisible once applied and lets UV trough so you don't have any uneven fading of the paint. They said it could protect paint from a 1" stone in excess of 120 mph. Impressive. I cant remember the name of the company (Minnesota Performance Products or something like that). However, they usually replay motorweek on various channels so you may be able to see it then. Good luck in the race.
One of the C5s at our last SoCal Dyno day had a clear plastic coating that was obviously made specifically for the C5. I did not ask the guy about, I assumed it was cleartastic. The Dyno operator noticed it too (it was hard to see untill you looked close). He said that 3M makes a tape that he used to for custom applications.
The Dyno shop was R&D Dyno in Gardena, CA. They are nice people. if you call and ask about the tape I am sure they could help you out.
