Default C5 distributors

Hi. I'm a c4 owner. I usually post on the C4 side, but I was wondering if anyone can give me a brief overview of the more modern (from my point of view) C5 distributor. I understand they dropped the dreaded opti for something a little more robust. I'm trying to learn a little from the corrections GM made there.

The LS series engines do not have a distributor. Ignition is controlled by the PCM.

Sorry to be so totally ignorant. What is the PCM? How does it get it's timeing?

What frustrates me about the C4 is Buick was using this in 1987. Here is a link http://www.aa1car.com/library/2004/us20406.htm. A google search of distributor less ignition will bring up a lot of reading.

The computer (PCM) gets crankshaft info from a magentic pick reading a toothed wheel on the crankshaft. The ONLY way you can mess with the tiiming is via a tuning computer.

Most cars do something like this today using crank and/or camshaft sensors to send position information to a computer that fires the plugs and contols injector pulse width.

You would be much better off switching to something like an MSD distributor.
