I have a 2002 heads cam car. It has a 160* thermostat. The last 2 times ive driven in town with the air on it has went to 230*. When running on highway the temp is fine. When i turn the air off in town it runs a little cooler.I have never had a problem with it running hot. When i got home today it was at 210,no city driving.I looked underneath at the fans 1 was running the other wasnt. I have burped the system twice.
Need ideas,im stumped.
Both fans are supposed to run in low speed mode and in high speed mode. Suggest you look at why the one fan is not working. Fuses? Relay? Jammed with a plastic bag? or ?????? Were the fan turn on points reset when you had the tune to go with the heads/cam?? What are the turn on temps?
Dont remember at what temp the fans come on. Nothing clogging the fan, turns freely with my hand.
Clearly from the statements in the original post he has an INOP fan. But we still don't know why. The OP has apparently checked only one of the items I listed and that is the fan is not jammed. How about fuses or relays? Owners manual states what fuse numbers and relays in the engine compartment fuse box pertain to the fans.......... Having only one of the two fans operating is likely the reason for the heating condition in traffic.
Of course the last choice is that the fan itself is bad or that the wiring to the INOP fan is loose or damaged.
I just checked the fuses, they are good. The only things left to check are the relays & fan motor. How do i check the relays to see if they are good. I am not very good with electrical stuff.
Another solution is to purchase one new relay and then one at a time swap the new with 43, 44, and 45 and check after each swap to see if the system operation changes. If the system operation changes then the last swapped relay is bad. If there is no change then either the motor is bad or the wiring to the fan is damaged, or loose.
Thats a great idea, buy one relay to find the bad one. I hooked up a 12 volt battery to the fan that wasnt working. The fan works. I guess the only thing left is a relay. How often does a relay go bad?

I took your advice & bought 1 relay. Did some switching & found the bad one. Fan now works like it should.
I definetly owe you a beer, oh hell, a case of beer. If you are going to Carlisle this year, let me know .
Thanks, i really appreciate the help.
