I have a 1998 that shows less miles on carfax two times in a row. I can understand an error entering data once, but this show 2 times on annual state car inspections. Is it easy to roll back a C5?
Not possible to rollback, if the guage cluster was replaced, it could have the incorrect mileage-I think the ECM will still have the correct mileage but you'll need a way to access it.

I'm sure it's possible. It can be done with just about any other car.

It seems it would be best to check this out before buying the car. What does the person/place you bought it from have to say?
I am unsure about GM's but in Chryslers that info is stored in the PCM and can be changed by anyone with a DRB(chrysler scan tool). It is supposed to be noted and filed but I am sure there are those out there who do not follow the letter of the law.
In Quebec the DMV does not track the vehicle odometer reading. For about $100 or so you can get a guy to meet you and rolled back almost any vehicle on the road before you sell it. Also, lots of second hand US vehicles for sale in Ontario seem to be routed through Quebec, likely to "wash" the odometer reading.

this is true. I 'know" a guy that does this in Toronto. It can be done

very incorrect. mileage is stored in the gauge cluster and can easily be changed by someone with the correct tools. plenty of shops can do it for a couple of hundred bucks.

The car is very good condition. I paid 14,500 and did not buy for resale.
1998 Black Conv. , new top, new chevy replacement seat covers and Z06 wheels. Replaced the visors and oil pressure sending unit. Speed reads 60,400, but I suspect it is around 72,000. I'm going to let a local Chevy dealer look it over and see if they can pick anything out of the Computer.
There were 3 people waiting to buy if I turned it down. I also have a 96 C4
My poor explorer just lost its garage spot for the 98 C5.

So what did the Carfax show the mileage to be? If it shows 72,000, I would expect it has way more than that. Why would someone turn it back only 11.6K??? If you are going to risk fraud charges it doesn't make cents. Personally I hope those that practice this type of fraud and deception get caught.
A bad deal is a bad deal no matter how many people line up to buy it. With the major issues that can be hidden to those that don't know Corvettes finding anything pointing to fraud would have me moving on to find a better deal, which are out there. JMHO -

This is so true. I believe that Quebec is the easiest place in North America for mileage rollbacked cars to be sold. It is not considered a serious criminal offence so most dealers that get caught get a very small fine and continue doing what they do best.......commit fraud. Mileage can be rolled back on "any" car.
