The oem valve springs in a '01 Ls1 are single design or dual? Does PAC make a quality spring that is suitable for performance, reliability and long life in a street driven Ls1 with a small cam?

The stock springs are a conical design. Some call it a beehive spring. If you are staying with a stock cam, these are the best in my opinion. That said, if they are original springs and if you have more that 50K miles, you might want to change them out for newer stock springs. They were upgraded in 2004 for all the LS engines. If you are changing to other than a stock cam, buy springs to match the need for the cam and any other valvetrain changes.

For a good stock upgrade without getting crazy on seat pressure, etc use Comp Cam's 26915 beehive. For more a bit more aggressive cams that need/require a bit more pressure, their 26918 is another good choice.
Like Eric D said, if you're changing cams then go with the recommended springs from the cam company.

PAC makes their own springs and they are known for high quality.
Both the PAC 1218 (.600 lift) and the PAC 1518 (.650 lift and nitrated) are excellent choices for stock to moderate cams. Both springs are drop in for LS1/6 engines.
