Default poor ac at highway speed...

Any thoughts where to start on this? everything seems to be working correctly, charge in ac is correct, makes nice cold air around town, gfoing slow or stop and go. at 70-80 after a bit it gets warm in the car... and the air coming out the vents is barely cold. Thanks for any suggestions...

This sounds backwards. It should work better on the highway. Check under your car to see if something flaps up with speed and blocks the ac condensor.

certainly nothing obvious that flaps up or anything - and the situation being "backwards" was my thought as well. I also don't know anything about the way the ducts and so forth are set up and wonder if there is a possibility that at higher speeds I'm somehow getting outside or engine heated air mixed with the ac...

Thanks for the thoughts...

Is there dirt and **** in the condenser/radiator. I just cleaned a gravel pit from mine. Definitely made a difference.

I would hook up some gauges and run the engine at 2000 rpm. My guess is something is causing the high or low side to go to far one way or the other at higher speeds and shutting the compressor off. Perhaps a slight blockage in the system?

EXACTLY!!

Sounds like you have a restricted orfice restrictor tube. The high and low side gage set will give you a TRUE diagnosis of the system. If the low side goes HIGH at upper RPMs, thats the issue.

Thanks a ton fo rthe help folks!

I topped off the charge, and cleaned what looked like a large birdsnest out of the top portion of the condenser and then vacuumed with a shop vac, etc... and it works MUCH better now!
