I Got The Service Column Lock Message?
I went to take my car out for a ride today and the battery was almost dead. I jumped it and put the car on the charger. Now everytime I start it the column lock message comes up on the dic.
Should I disconnect the battery to see if it clears the code, or is a trip to the dealer instore for me.
I am getting a new battery under warranty, because if the car isn't driven for a week it goes down or dead.
$45,000 car and GM can't make a battery last. What a joke?
Re: I Got The Service Column Lock Message? (Corvette ED)
I did not have the battery problem but I did get the column lock problem; I thought the 01s and newer were supposed to be immune from this problem. I had it towed and the lock replaced under warranty, rental car included. Maybe because it was an early 01?
Re: I Got The Service Column Lock Message? (Corvette ED)
There are several old threads here that give you different ways to fix this problem. I have printed some off. Let me know if you cant find them I can send them to you.
This happened to my 98 and I had it towed to the dealer for warranty fix.
If it happens in the future I will try some of the forum tricks.
Re: I Got The Service Column Lock Message? (Corvette ED)
Sure glad GM "fixed" this on '01s! What a p.o.s. part and after so long with no real fix--the company's WORSE! :yesnod:
btw, if your battery is dead after setting no longer than a week, something is WRONG! My '01 sometimes sets longer while I'm gone and it whirls over like a turbine when I get home. Good luck!
Re: I Got The Service Column Lock Message? (Corvette ED)
Hi Ed,
I am your southern neighbor from Hamburg. It sounds that your vehical is not really locked up and that this is a DIC display issue. As a prior reply suggests there were a mirad of posts a year or so ago on your DIC issue; however, the discharge battery sounds like an issue that should be resolved ASAP by the dealer and then the DIC issue should be addressed. I have had my 01 for over a year now with 15000 miles on the odometer and have not had any issues. It has set for several 4 week periods between trips without any battery weakness. The battery in your vehical should be the gel cell AC Delco model from the factory which is a good battery. You may have gotten a bum one or there is somethng draining it.

Re: I Got The Service Column Lock Message? (Bruce Heffner)
Bruce,
I know that GM has had problems with the batteries in the Corvettes. I am getting a new one under warranty at Bob Weaver's this week. They told me that the last two Corvettes they got in they had to replace the batteries.
They are also going to look at the column lock problem.
See you at the Corvette Club meeting next Thursday.
Re: I Got The Service Column Lock Message? (Corvette ED)
A discharged battery can cause a "service column lock" message :yesnod: The column lock actuator needs the required voltage to operate. The column lock didnt operate and the BCM detected it,resulting in the message.I would bet that your column lock is stuck in the "unlocked" position :yesnod:If you remove fuse #25 BCM (at right footwell, center of fuse box) and reinstall it,the BCM will reset the column lock and it will function properly again...Then get a new battery ;)

yup yanking fuse 25 under passenger footwell will clear it :yesnod:
