Remember this a 13 yr old car, that may have hi milage. Even when new a C5 A4 with 2.73s wasn't a barn burner. They ran mid to hi 13s if memory serves. My car had 3.15s and ran mid 13s most of the time when it was stock. It's not just the gears that limit performance it's also the terrible 1300 stall stock T/C that cripples the performance of stock A4s.

Ok so what I've gathered from everybody's input is
It needs a better torque converter

Which one? (Pluses and Minuses)
How much are they?
How many hours is the job?
How will it actually benefit the car?
If the car was tuned before the T/C, would it need to be re-tuned?

Sorry for all the questions. I just figure I'd ask all at once.

You don't want to do the T/C without new gears (if you are running 2.73). You need to get to 3.15 or 3.42 gears, I would suggest 3.42 because the cost will be pretty much the same and you get more from going 2.73 to 3.42 (bigger change). The T/C without gears would be a waste.

My 02 A4 with 2.73s ran 13.1 bone stock then 12.8 with a Vararam. I was surprised by those numbers myself... but in a very good way.

If I were your Dad I would buy you something I could outrun and be done with it. Prabably cheaper too.
