So my dad has a 97 corvette automatic. The only modification he has is an after market air filter. He wants to be able to keep up with me at the track.
I figure his two best options are to either get a dyno tune and flash with more aggressive timing, or get a cat-back exhaust.
I'm leaning more towards the dyno tuning, because there are so many types of exhausts out there it's hard to decide. I've heard some crappy ones even rob horsepower.
I went from 283 rwhp to 313 after my tune (A4 car), added headers to compliment the x pipe and Corsa Pace Car and gained even more. I have 3.15's and am happy with them.
A gear change won't change HP, but it will take .5 seconds off the vehicles quarter mile times. I had an FRC and went from a 345 to a 410 and cut .5 off my quarter mile. I could have done faster with better rubber. Best bang for the buck and no internal engine change. With the auto you need to update the computer ASAP because RPM controls the shift points and a gear change canges the speed per RPM.
I always recommend a set of long tubes for the LS motors. They respond really well to them and make the car sound a little better! Gears are a great swap but can get pricey because of the IRS. Good luck with it!
Best mod for an A4 is a torque converter. It's like driving a different car, night and day difference. I did a Yank 3000 when I used to own an auto (before I switched to an M6).
It's easy to say something like a supercharger or a heads and cam package would be a great way to go, but the cost on doing so if high. I just did a Yank SS3200 converter, a 3.42 diff and AR LT headers with a tune and couldn't be happier. Totally different beast now!
If it has the 2.72 diff you NEED to change it! That's what I had stock and I went to a 3.42 and converter, big change. Watch for a used 3.42 diff, they come up in the used parts section often. It will make a huge difference but if funds permitting do the converter at the same time to save on the labor later!
Do you guys have links to threads that show how to change gears and torque converters? What's the difference with the torque converter? Is this still a decent daily driving setup?

Could not agree more. Excluding NOS, a converter like the Yank SS3200 or SS3600 and 3.42 or 3.73 gears are the best bang for the buck on an A4 hands down. A high stall converter allows your engine to instantly spool up higher in the RPM band were your engine is making much more HP. It will also give you higher shift extentions. The Yank SS series converters have excellent street manners. BTW what 1/4 mile times did you and your dad run in the video. You spanked him pretty good LOL

With a best of 13.9 I think your dads car has 2.73 gears and definately needs a gear swap and a hi stall T/C. With a good converter and gears, your dads car should run mid 12s and be more than a match for you. If he does T/C and gears he will need a tune to tweak shift points & shift firmness & drag radials to control wheel spin.

Hey where does one go to get this tune you keep talking about, I live in mid state Florida (Ocala) and I am still looking for a good corvette shop/mechanic.

I'd check in the Regional section, probably find info there.

Call Horsepower Sales in Pompano Beach ask for Roger. Or if you're closer to N Fla. call Mike Norris at Next Level performace. Or you can go the mail order tune route. Send your computer to Carmen at the Vette Doctors or Cartek.

Designer Imagines A Corvette That Looks More Like a Corvette Than the Corvette
Slideshow: A Jaguar designer's personal project imagines what a modern front-engined Corvette might look like if Chevrolet revisited the golden age of the Stingray.
