Default Automatic transmission ?

I just purchased my first corvette 1999 C5 coupe with an automatic and 75,000 miles on it, I have all the maintenance records on the car but noticed the transmission was never serviced, should this be done now? it seems like it should shift faster through the gears when WOT if so what fluids would you recommend?

thanks any help would be appreciated

I have heard both schools of thought at this kind of mileage. I check it first if it smels burnt I'd hold off on changing untill I could get a transmission specialist recomendation. I have heard new fluid will tend to losen up varnish and then plug passages creating problems where none existed if its not bunt smelling I'd go ahead and change it ASAP. Heck the car could have been someones cream puff and it may have never been worked hard, Just my .02 cents

If your fluid looks and smells ok, then leave it alone. But if you are going to make a fluid change, make sure you use a quality Dexron III non-synthetic oil. (AC Delco, Mobil, etc.) With the pan dropped, look in the bottom of the pan and see what is going on. The magnet should have some fine powdered metal on it and the bottom of the pan should be clean. In otherwords you should not be able to write your name in the bottom of the pan with your finger, if you can then this is clutch/band material. If the material on the bottom is slight or none and you want to keep the transmission alive for awhile, you could add the TransGo modified Shift kit. This will extend the life of the transmission and quicken the shifts at the same time. The modified version offers smooth (but not firm) quick part throttle shifts, and quicker and firmer WOT shifts. If the material is much more than slight, you are probably looking into a rebuild in the near future. Dana
