Default Cost guess

Can anyone give me a guesstamate what it would cost to tear-down and replace one piston and connecting rod. Would the engine need to be pulled? Can it be done from the bottom?

It would probably cost $1500+, but I wouldn't do it and I doubt any other reputable shop would either. If you have a damaged piston or rod the engine needs to come out, be completely disassembled, inspected and cleaned up. Then whatevers damaged, replaced. Otherwise metal from the bad parts is going the circulate through the engine.

Bill, my problem is #7 . What other parts were replaced. The engine only ran for approx 45 seconds. Any concern with metal pieces in the engine?

What's the rest of the story? You started a new engine and 45 secs later it has a piston problem? Who built it?

Depends on how the incident occurred. My friends car is forced induction so he blew out the top ring land. Most of the pieces went out the exhaust valve as they were fairly small.

Give us the details and I sure that we can help point you in the correct direction.

Just the bearing, piston and rings were replaced on that cylinder. The cylinder was lightly scuffed honed to break the glaze.

Bill, in retrospect, this is what I think may have happened. The supercharger has 65# injectors. I think one must have been defective and stuck open, flooded the cylinder and hydrolocked that cylinder. Does that make sense to you? Also, how do I check that injector?

First of all the engine was not new it has 48000 miles on it. If you reread my post, you will see that I had just finished a supercharger install, and this was the initial start-up. I think I have a defective fuel injector that dumped fuel till it hydrolocked that cylinder. You know what happens next.

Well,,,lets see,,,,,,, I had the same issue. I thought FOR SURE,,,a fuel injector stuck open. NO WAY I could have buggered up a gead gasket install. NO way could coolant have gotten in that cylinder!

So,,,,I pulled off the intake manifold and this is what I found:

The HEAD had a defect in the intake runner. SURPRISE!! Both valves were shut so it pooled up in the runner. Dont ruel out coolant!

Point being taken, I thought the same thing that you did. Fuel Injector!

Pull the fuel rail off the intake, point it to the sky (do your self a favor and put a rag over the injectors) and turn on the ignition. If you have a bad injector, it will spray fuel everywhere. (Take all fuel safety precautions and have a extingusher handy!!)

If you have a leakey injector, it will drip fuel!

The injectors are only held in by the pressure fit of the "O" rings to the rail. How do I keep them from flying off when I turn the key on? I had a problem with leaking at the top of the rail during the installation. I fixed it by putting an extra "O" ring (smaller) on top of the injector.
