Default Low Oil Message

I did an oil change this afternoon by the book, very routine, installed filter and added 5 1/2 quarts Mobil 1. Started the engine for a minute while still up on the ramps to check for leaks, oil pressure. Everything was OK. Moved the car off the ramps, went in the house to clean up, got in the car a few minutes later to run an errand. I let the car idle for about 30 seconds and got the LOW OIL message. I Checked the level and found that it barely registered on the dip stick. I was getting 35 - 40 psi pressure during this 30 second idle. I repeated this process again with the same results. I know what the dip stick should look like after an oil change, and there is not a lake of oil under the car. Any ideas as to what the problem is? Is there a flat bed truck in my immediate future?

You are a quart too low. The correct amount of oil is 6 1/2 qts.

You need to add 6 1/2 not 5 1/2. You are a quart low.

I rechecked my calendar for today. Sure enough it said 1) Change oil, 2) Embarrass yourself on the corvette forum. I guess when you "do it by the book" you should actually bother to LOOK at the book. Oh well, never underestimate the effects of aging brain cells. At least I remembered to reinstall the drain plug. By the way my wife just walked in and said, "I thought it took 6 1/2 quarts".
