Default Question about the Blackwing Air Filter

When you install one of these should you cut a hole the shroud for it to get more air or just let it lay on it and get what it can?

Thanks,
Russell

Any gains your engine achieves from the filter's larger surface area are lost when engine bay temps climb during slow-moving and stop & go driving. That means that up to 10 RWHP can be dialed away by the ECU.

You do have a couple of choices to bring cold air in:

1) Cut holes in or remove the fog light panels and then add Z06 screens. Disadvantage: Your fog lights won't look very good.

2) Do my CAI mod which includes an air scoop, stainless steel screen, and highly-directed airflow at and past the filter.

Directions for this mod can be found here:

(Give it about 20 seconds to load, as it contains plenty of photos.)

If you cut a hole in the shroud, without putting a cover over the filter, it will allow more dirt and dust into the engine compartment.
They used to make a cold air box specifically for the Blackwing, but I think it was discontinued long ago. There are other cold air boxes on the market. You will just need to be sure they will fit over the Blackwing.

The molded cover for the "Blackwing" was referred to as an "ice box cover". You have to cut a precise opening in your shroud to attach the cover over the filter. You might still be able to find them used or new. Depending on the source, new or used in ABS, gell coat or carbon fiber, the cover should cost you anywhere from $50-100.00+.

Use "ice box cover" as keywords in C5 Tech with search or search this forum (in the red banner). You'll find lots of past threads about them.

I had the "ice box cover" and "Blackwing" on my Z16, but I got intermittent lean bank codes at 5,200 ft altitude. I returned to the oem air intake (modified) with the same performance, sound and no codes...not as sexy looking though.

A company in OR called TEAM ZR1 used to sell a gell coated version of the cover for about $150. You might contact them at teamzr1.com

Modifying your fog light shrouds will allow more air into the filter w/o cutting the shroud.

I cut a rectangular area out of the fog light shrouds and put Z06 screens on and it lets a nice amount of air in and my fog lights show up very nicely.....

I checked, and they do still sell them. Not a vendor here, so I can't link to it.

The one I was thinking of was vacuum formed plastic. Cheap, light weight, and did the job.
