Why not put it back into the hub. Put the axle nut back on. Grab the rotor and jerk the rotor downward to remove spline from diff? It does just slide out of the diff.

Because you'll just pull the outer CV joint apart.
You have to pry it out of the diff by using a bar between the diff and the axle.
YEP!!! Get a BIG screwdriver and wedge it betweem the diff and the CV Housing and give it a heeve hoo and it will pop loose. Trust me. I just accomplished the same issue. DO NOT try to pull it off at the rotor side.

You got that right Bill. I did it the wrong way once and wound up having to replace the clip inside the CV joint because it broke into 3 pieces! NOT FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!
