So I was driving home from our roadtrip on the highway and there was alot of trucks overtaking other trucks and I made some hard accelerations to get away from that annoying BMW behind me, he had no chance , and after the 4th or 5th acceleration when the car hits the 3rd gear I hit the rev limiter a couple of times and get no power to the wheels only rpm like its in neutral or something. I pull over and test the shifting and its seems to run fine on 1 st and 2nd gear but when in 3rd gear nothing happens when I hit the gas except the rpm goes up and it will not shift to 4th gear. We had to drive 220 miles home in 2nd gear. Took some time but we saw nice views from the small roads that we havent seen before .
Has the 3rd and 4th clutches broken or what could be the problem? Am I looking at a new transmission or can it be fixed? What kind of costs would be expected? Was it these repeated accelerations that caused the blown transmission or would it have blown eventully anyway? The car has 65k miles on the odometer. When the transmission blew I saw that the trans temp was 207 F (97 C), the oil temp 216 F (102 C) and the the coolant 194 F (90 C). Isnt that normal temps?
Don't let a local shop or Chevy touch your trans. Call TJ @ RPM Transmissions and get a level V for your vette. They don't "patch up" your trans, they make it bulletproof. The cost will be comparable to a stock 4l60, but sooooo much stronger. Rod
I had the same happen to me 2 weeks ago. It was the 3rd and 4th gear clutches. I was on the Mississippi coast at the time and nobody except the Chevy dealer would even touch the car. I ended up having a new transmission with 3 year warranty installed for $3711.00 I wanted an RPM transmission, but couldn't get anyone to install it in Gulfport, MS. The car was finished yesterday and I am going from FL to MS to pick it up on Monday.
I live in Sweden. Do you think RPM can ship internationally?
I'm sure they can ship it if you're willing to pay the freight.
You don't list any specs for your car in your profile. Unless you have a lot more than 400 rwhp a level IV RPM would be more than enough - but just talk to TJ, he'll tell you what you need.
