I just drained and flushed mine today. Used the royal purple. Shifts are as smooth as butter now. A million times better. But I also installed a new twin disk clutch, pilot bearing, release bearing so don't know if the rp made that big differnce.
I'm an old guy and a lifelong stick shift guy, synthetic made a huge difference in the old 4 speeds (muncies ,super t 10's and hemi 4 speeds) but they used 90 weight so when I decided to switch to synthetic in my 03 z/06 as the factory oil was lightweight I didn't expect much and boy I was certainly surprised,It made a noticable improvement. For the cash outlay and labor involved it's a no brainer ,make the switch you won't be disappointed
When I got my low-mile manual trans '03 Coupe two years ago I was absolutely appalled at how badly it shifted. I truly thought something was wrong with it, it was so balky, notchy, heavy, hard to find gears, etc. I arranged to drive a couple of other C5 manuals and found that they all sucked. I was actually considering dumping the car because of the shifting. I switched to RP Synchromax and while it did not work wonders, it was an improvement for not much $.
I had it in my 2000 but after about 3-4k miles with it I noticed rougher shifting, I switched to Penzoil Syncromesh and it went away, back to normal, its about $5 a qt at Autozone.
I thought I was ready for a rebuilt. Had to double clutch to get it in gear at a stop. Very hard to get into 2nd at anytime. I changed to Royal Purple at 90K miles, within 20-30 miles it felt like I had a new transmission. I am at 107K now, still shifts like new.
Thanks for all the input, I have a 2000 with a little over 40k miles so the fluid is ten years old. The shifting can be notchy at times. It sounds like the majority are happy with it and only a few not so much. I will give it a try. Thanks
Been running RP for a few thousand miles now, and it works well. Seems notchy at first when the car is cold (not my DD), but after 5 or 10 minutes of driving, it shifts real good.
