Default What transmission fluid?

Not much luck with a search, so what transmission fluid do you run?

My car will hit 100k soon and I want to do a transmission fluid change. Just wondering what everyone on here has had luck with and recommends.

Dex 3,4 5 or 6

You'll probably want to have a shop do it as you have to pump the fluid up into the transmission with the car running and up on a lift AND level.

I just used a fluid that met dex 3 standards. Are you going to do it yourself?

DEXRON(R)-VI ATF

General Motors Powertrain has recently upgraded to DEXRON(R)-VI ATF with the start of 2006 vehicle production.

Only 2005 and prior models that currently use DEXRON(R)-III may use DEXRON(R)-VI as a replacement.

All 2006 and future models that use DEXRON(R)-VI are to be serviced with DEXRON(R)-VI fluid only.

DEXRON(R)-VI is an improvement over DEXRON(R)-III in the areas shown.

2006-2007 Transmission Fill and Cooler Flushing

Some new applications of the 6L80 six speed transmission will require the use of J 45096 - Flushing and Flow Tester to accomplish transmission fluid fill. It is highly recommended that the clean oil reserve of the machine be purged of DEXRON(R)-III and filled with DEXRON(R)-VI.

Mobil 1 ATF D/M
Valvoline Dex/Merc ATF
Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF
Pennzoil Multi-Vehicle ATF
Quaker State ATF
Chevron MD-3

According to their individual websites, all the above are Dexron III compatible. It should also state on the bottles.

The tranny will hold a little over 3 qts when you drain it well and refill.
So, buy 4, and fill until it runs out the filler hole - have the car reasonably level.

Your 2001 will tolorate any Dextron compatible Synthetic ATF.

Early years (1997-2000) C5s have paper blocker rings and can not use Mobil 1 ATF.

I put Amsoil ATD1G in my 1998 and it has been great. It costs about $44 plus shipping for a one gallon jug.

Synthetic ATF shifts better, especially when cold.

I use and recommend:
AMSOIL Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid (Product Code ATD1G)

The tranny will take about 3.5 quarts, so a one gallon jug works well.

And for the DIYer:
AMSOIL Hand Pump (Product Code G2039)
Note: I recommend taking the plastic tip off the end of the fill tube as it is not needed and might come off.

Except that mine took a bit more than 3.5 quarts but there will be some left from the 1 gallon jug.

I recently went through this for my 99 and called Tremec for their recommendation. They specified GM Dextron III (hard to find but on the shelf at some dealerships) or (preferred) Mobil 1.

I usually use Red Line D4 ATF in my 6-speed. You can use the D4 in both the auto and manuals.
