I have a 2003 Z06 and when it sits at idle there is a knocking sound from the transmission. It is noticeable when standing in front and on the side of the car. I have no issues shifting and don't think it is in the engine. I checked all of the fluids and everything is at the correct levels. Any ideas? Should I be concerned or am i being paranoid? It only has 28,xxx on it.
Any knocking sound would freak me out. It's always cheaper to fix before it totally breaks. I would re-create the sound and then find out exactly where it is coming from. A failure at highway speed could be dangreous.
What makes you think it is coming from the transmission? Have you pushed the clutch in to see if the sound goes away?
The valvetrains on our cars are a bit loud and that my be the sound you are hearing. Also the torque tube makes a serious clunk when shutting off. As compared to my Accord

You do know the transmission is in the rear of the car....right?
Fluids being low rarely if ever make a knocking sound go away. By that time it is too late. The stock clutch on the Z is a bit noisy and more of a rattle. The fuel injectors are noisy to the point of sounding like a sewing machine.
Get car on a lift and get under there for a looksee. Could be a loose part, could be nothing at all.

If you want to make that clunk go away when you shut the car off, just push the clutch pedal in. I do it since the clunk annoys me.
To the OP, if it's a rattling type of sound that goes away when the clutch pedal is pushed in, it's the throw out bearing.
