Hello to all; I need some help please...my 98 has these issues; at first the E/M was changing back and forth constantly switching unit of measure; then all the buttons stopped working all together.
I have seen some threads with the same issues, but none of with have a definitive solution to the issue; so I thought in checking if anyone would kindly point me in the right direction.
There are a few things to begin checking that may lead to the source of the problem:
1) Is the passenger side carpet wet? Common issue this time of year and the AC drain being pluggged causes the condensate to backup into the car. The wet carpet can lead to a wet BCM (in the passenger footwell to the left of the IPC fuse box). If the BCM gets wet there are all sorts of problems that will result.
2) Have you checked the battery voltage across the battery posts with a digital voltmeter and NO KEY in the ignition? Most of the electronics in the car require a minimum of 12.5 volts to function properly although it is possible to start the car with as little as 12.2 volts.
3) Check the rubber accordian boots between the door and the body for bare wires. Here is a link to a thread that talks about the Class 2 serial buss wires getting bare and causing a lot of dash related problems. Also has a solution. Check both doors:
4) Check the buttons to see if any are jammed in the depressed position. A single switch jammed in may cause this problem.
5) Here is a clip from a thread a few years back that may also be helpful: The DIC buttons are wired to the IPC directly. The IPC provides the 5 volt power for them, and is also the ground for the buttons. There ia a multi-color wiring bundle from the IPC to the switches. You will have to remove the IPC and see if the connector has come loose. If it is not loose, then you need to check between the GREY wire (ground) and any of the others and see if you get 5 volts across them. If you don't get 5 volts, the IPC needs repair/replacement. If you get 5 volts, then the switches themselves are bad. If I had to guess one of the switches has "jammed" as if you were holding it down constantly, and the other switches aren't functioning due to that one.
A nice lady and her husband that work with my Mother have a C5 with the broken DIC buttons too.
I'll email them this thread and see if I can help em' now
When you pull the IPC out and then separate it in half to where you can get to the DIC and HUD switches itself...can you open the DIC "switches" portion up individually to say get in there and "pop" a button back up that is stuck down?

Yes you can, you'll have to drill out some of those plastic "rivets" that are melted over though, then you can release the side pressure clips and disassemble the switch.

Did you ever find the actual solution to your problem?
I recently purchased a 99 FRC and it has the same problem. None of the DIC buttons work, but they still light up. I bought a known working DIC button replacement unit, and the problem still exists. Battery voltage is good, and I have yet to check the CAN wires in the door boots, although I have checked the chassis grounds. It is not an intermittent failure, it is kaput all of the time. There are no codes that I can see(without the Tech2 at least), and the Display is functioning normally(Corvette by Chevrolet, and odometer pop up with no issue. Displays that I have turned off traction control as well).
Any ideas besides the CAN connections in the doors?

See post #3. Lucky knows more about these cars than GM.
I'm not sure how old this post is but have you found any remedy? I would love to know.

You have to remove the IPC to get to the DIC button assembly to do anything.
If a button is jammed, have you tired to use a jewelers screwdriver to get it to pop loose?
I got it scanned and it's coming up bad dic switch #4. Can't find that part. It's discontinued, I'm going to try prying with the jewelers screwdriver. would spraying mass air sensor cleaner hurt anything? Any ideas on where i could get the part ?
