after charging a dead battery and starting the car the Service column Lock message appeared. Is it OK to drive the car until Tuesday when I can get it into th dealer?
I'd clear the codes and see if it comes back. If not don't worry about it. On the outside chance it comes back, and the steering column does lock (hopefully not while driving) here's the fix I got from a service manager for the one time my column lock kicked in. It worked, and it's never come back.
<<turn on key and IMMEDIATELY slam the left side of the steering wheel, and then the right side with your hand, then IMMEDIATELY turn off the key. Turn the key back on, and see if it's clear>> it was and I've never had another problem with it.
Can't guarantee it will work for everyone... sounded wierd to me, but I had a witness to prove it works.
Re: service column lock question (K&B Motorsports)
Thanks for the info. I just went out and checked it again. The message does come on every time I start the car but I just noticed that when I shut the engine off the wheel does not lock. I bought the 99 used and I wonder if a column bypass has already been installed?
I would guess a bypass has NOT been installed or if it was installed then it is somehow sending a bad signal back.
Probably your column lock has broken in the OPEN position.
There is a recall on many C5's that probably applies to yours.
I guess you have several choices: live with it as is, take it to your dealer for the recall fix or install the bypass.
I had the recall done last year without any issues to date... Many have done the bypass so it's really a decision you are going to have to make. IMHO, I wouldn't drive it with the possibility of getting stuck anywhere. :nonod:
Starting with a discharged battery will confuse the BCM,and the column lock circuit needs full voltage to operate. :yesnod: To reset the system, pull BCM1 fuse #25 at the passenger footwell and reinstall it.The message will be gone and the column lock will function again. :yesnod: After doing this you may get the "pull key, wait 10 secs" display...Pull the key, reinsert it,and you will be good to go ;)
