Default Turn signals not working

I have a 2001 convertible, and tonight the turn signals stopped working. Everything else seems to be functioning normally (headlights, interior lights, instruments) just the turn signals. A couple times when I flipped the lever, the arrow blinked once or twice, but then stopped. Most of the time they never came on at all. This is the first time I've noticed this as a problem. Any ideas what might have caused this? Thanks for the help.

Try cycling the emergincy flashers (many times) with and without the blinker on. It should clear, for a little bit anyway. Mine has been good for over 20k miles and still ticking after doing this.

If exercising the hazard switch works for you good. It worked for me, for a while. I had to bypass the hazard switch because it is not reliable and i got tired of having no turn signals. I did the bypass. Cost $9.00 total.

The only thing you remove is the knee panel to do the bypass.

I agree the bi-pass cable is the only way to go. If you choose not to build one yourself, you can buy them for 50-60 bucks and install them in 20 minutes. I installed one 3 years ago that I bought from Corvettes of Houston and it's worked perfectly ever since. Don't bother replacing the hazard switch, it's difficult and time consuming compared to simply installing the bi-pass cable.

lots of posts on this problem, try search. I used LUBEIT 8 SUPER OIL WITH TEFLON after removing the cover on the hazard flasher. Just squirted some into the space at the top of the switch, pressed the switch a few times, reinstalled the cover and have had no further problems.

Great write up.
I flew to Florida from St Louis to purchase my 1999 C5 Convertible A4. As I was driving home I discovered the signals wern't working. I called my dealer and they want 100 to diagnose and the parts guy said it may be the switch (stalk with the cruise) Quoted me 389 for that.
I got on this forum and ten dollars later I have functioning signals. THANKS...
My hazards still do not work, Can another flasher be spliced in for the hazards? I tried cycling the hazard switch several times.

I installed the hazard switch in the dash about three years ago and it's been working fine since. I hate to tell you but you'll eventually have to go that route. It took me about 4 hrs to take the front of the dash apart, install the hazard switch ($30) and put everything together. FYI installing the new switch is harder than removing the old one. You would probably do well to make this a WINTER project like I did.

Default Worked for me!

I needed to get my new '02 Z06 inspected and the blinkers weren't working. I thought this would end up being an expensive fix but after searching the forums I found this thread. Cycling the hazard button about 30 times worked for me. I'll go ahead and lubricate the switch the next time they start acting up.

With that said:

Normally the issue is that just the contacts for the turn signal function get burned from use since they carry the current for the 2 bulbs up front and the 4 in the rear. When you turn the Hazards on they are fed from different contacts. When you cycle the Hazards ON and OFF it tends to help swipe the turn signal contacts which is a temporary fix.

Here are 4 ways to fix a turn signal Hazard switch issue.

1. Remove the console and radio surround bezel and remove and replace the Hazard switch. Cost about $25 for a new switch and can be done in about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Very easy to do, not hard or really complicated.

After removing the console and radio bezel you need to remove the radio. If you look at your replacement switch you will see the 2 green tabs on the top and bottom that lock it in place. You will be able to see the lower one when the radio is removed. Push up on the lower tab with a screwdriver while pressing in on the lower part of the switch and you can release the lower tab. Now the switch should be angled up on the end where the wiring connects. Now take a large flat bladed screw driver and place it at the top of the switch. Give the screwdriver a swift rap with a hammer. DON’T overdo it, just a reasonable hard hit and the switch will just pop out.

How to remove the console and bezel for access to the radio:

http://www.vetteessentials.com/instr...zel_howto.html

If you have a manual transmission you can totally remove the radio bezel very easily to allow better access. No need to remove the shifter ****. Just pop the shifter boot loose and rotate it and it will allow you to lift the bezel up and over the shift boot and shifter ****.

2. Buy a Hyperflash unit for about $65 and install it under the dash. Just requires removing the Knee bolster. About a 1/2 hour job.

3. Buy a used wiring harness that goes from the steering column to the hazard switch. Remove the knee bolster and unplug the existing one and install the replacement. Then install the new Hazard switch on the other end and just place it under the ignition switch where you can access it if you ever need Hazards. Dash will look stock since the old bad switch is still there. Cost is 25$ for switch and about 25$ for used harness. Takes the same time as installing a Hyperflash unit.

Here is info on the wiring harness:

GM P/N 12163776

http://www.corvetterecycling.com/product-p/233776.htm

4. Lastly, this is what I did. A relocation similar to #3 but I used the process in #1 to move the existing wiring harness to beneath the ignition switch where I placed a new Hazard switch. I then reinstalled the old Hazard switch in the dash for a stock appearance.

Here is a link for relocation:

I replaced my switch by just removing the knee bolster and there is a hole or access under the dash beside ignition switch that U can get your hand up under dash and wiggle the swithch out after you get it loose from the front. Remove the haz button, use a small screw driver to push and pry from the bottom of switch until it is loose and then take big screw driver and whack or bump the top of the switch. This will release the switch and you can reach up under dash through this hole I described and wiggle the switch out. I just unplugged old switch and installed a new one and just left it under the carpet beside the console for easy access next time and put the haz button back into the original switch hole for looks only. I had to wrap several raps of tape around it to get it to stay in the hole. about a 30 minute job, there is a You tube of a guy doing it this way.

Alright folks, that didn't last long. Cycling the switch worked for about a day or two...

I went ahead and just replaced the switch for $25 bucks. It is really not that difficult at all. I thought about the bypass option but I'm keeping my Z06 bone stock.
