Default Oil pump replacement

I am in the middle of tearing down for an oil pump replacement, I found a goor write up on LShowto but its for fbodys. I am down to taking the crank pulley off but it looks like i have to remove the steering rack in order to do this. Is that right? I hope not but it looks like i cant even get to the bolt without removing it.

Any one else shaired this pain want to give me some pointers?

Yes, you have to remove the rack. When you get to this point, you should consider getting a good high performance pump, and be very careful about the o-ring when you re-install. There's a write-up at ls1howto.com that's for 'Vettes, and it's pretty good. I don't know where you're going with your car, but at this point, a cam install is very simple. The only down side to that is, you'd have to do valvesprings at the same time. Your first time of removing the steering rack is pretty intimidating, but you'll get through it. Lot of work. Oh yeah, get a good aftermarket dampner when you re-install. It's worth it. Also, buy a new timing chain. The current factory replacement is the former LS2 chain, which is alot beefier. GL with the installation.

Hi There,
Have you given any thoughts to buying a shop manual?

DO NOT follow LS1howto.com for removal and installation of the harmonic damper (pulley). It is wrong and you may end up with damage crankshaft threads. I would suggest a search on this one before you go too far.

Thanks for the info on the removal. I have been looking into a shop manual but this one seems pretty straight forward. My big question was on the steering rack. I decided to go with the Melling high flow pump it was only 150 on autozone. Went to the dealer for the crank pulley bolt and timing cover seal

You won't get much from the service manual. Just little things...like properly centering the timing cover so you don't trash the crank seal. But I'm sure you already know stuff.
