Default Engine Noise: need help

I have a 2000 C5 w/ the base 5.7L engine and it currently has 139,000 miles on the odometer. Purchased the car over 2 yrs ago when it had 99K. It does suffer from cold engine piston slap and did when I purchased it, but other than that it has been very reliable as my daily driver.

Over the last week, I have noticed a noise coming from the top front of the engine, one that sounds like a considerable air leak or possibly vacuum leak. The engine runs fine, no loss in power or no missing or rough idle.

After removing the serpentine belt, thinking the noise may be coming from one of the drive accessories, and starting the engine, the noise is still there. My plan is to get a stethoscope to try and locate the exact spot of the noise.

Any ideas as to what this noise could be? It sounds like an air leak, but it could be some kind of mechanical noise....just not sure at this time.

Hi There,
I would check your accordian type coupler. Make sure it is tight & also look for cracks in between the creases or folds. Check your a/bridge for cracks or loose clamps.

Also check your PCV plumbing. Make sure all the fittings are tight and there's no cracks or pinholes anywhere.

If you think it is an air/vac leak, just use a length of hose to pin point it.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'll try those tonight. This would be awesome news if it is only an external air leak. Whatever it is, it's rather loud.

One thing I for got to mention is the "check engine" warning light started to appear on Friday. Could be something all together different, but just thought I would add that information.

If the "check engine" light came on you must be getting a code, yes?

Default It is a vacuum leak!

Although you can't see it at first, the rubber hose which exits the right front side of the intake plenum has a split in it. I used a piece of tubing placed in my ear to locate it (still need to get a stethoscope).

Where is the best place to buy a new one of these molded rubber parts? GM dealership?
