Can anyone tell me about the idle relearn you're supposed to do when you install a Blackwing?
I put mine in last week and disconnected the battery. After I did that, I started it up just to hear it. This week, I took it out and drove around for about an hour or so, some in town some on the highway.
Tonight, I went and tested it again with my GTech and came out about 16HP less than what I started off with, under the same testing conditions, except that it was about 20F warmer.
Granted, testing HP with a GTech is pretty unscientific, so I've been trying to eliminate whatever variables I can. Part of me thinks I screwed up the relearn process and part of me just thinks an error exists in the passenger compartment. :(
There is not any extraordinary procedure to have your car relearn the extra flow of an aftermarket intake other than just driving it for about 150 miles. I have heard that with the new (better) MAF on a 2002 the Blackwing is not the choice of choices. I hope someone chimes in here and gives you the low-down on your blackwing because I think it is a beautiful setup

I don't think the Blackwing is a poorer choice on a 2002 than it was on any other model year. The 2002 MAF has the screen removed, therefore it provides better airflow. This may reduce the overall improvement seen with the Blackwing but all other aftermarket filters should be affected the same way.
I have an 2002. I didn't disconnect the battery, and just started the car, and drove around. I could feel an immediate SOTP improvement. There my be better HP choices, but I like the look, and the non-cutting needed.
20F can make a difference in HP as we know. Colder=more, warmer=less, but can 20F mean 16HP? If so, it just wiped out your increase in theory.
He has a convertible so the screens are in the MAF unless he removed them. I personally think the G-Tech can easily be off that much. They are double integrating an accelerometer and the angle of attachment and many other variables come into play. Dyno would have been a better way to go.
I hope you people realize that I am not saying anything bad about the Blackwing. I really wanted to go that route because I think it is the best looking system out there IMO. I did however hear from a few 02rs that they had some very minor problems after the install. I did not follow up on there posts because I opted to get the Vortex. Correct me if I am wrong :yesnod:
Are you sure the screen was removed from the factory on 02 coupes and verts
My MAF looks exactly like the one in picture #4 of the tech tips guide. It looks a lot like a screen to me, but having never seen any kind of MAFs before, I can't be sure.
As far as using a GTech is concerned, I'm learning that it's not the greatest. It works by calculating your acceleration over time, so if you have a bad launch (like me) then you get inaccurate results. At this point, you're probably wondering why I didn't dyno my car... the reason is because I haven't found a dyno where I live yet. :(
For those keeping track, I went out again last night and tried it again and ended up getting about a 10RWHP improvement, but all that really says is that I need to improve my launches, since my previous reading was 268RWHP and the one last night was 279RWHP. Looks like my biggest bang for the buck mod would be driving school. :boxing
1) Will I really notice any performance difference?
Yes, I certainly did, blackwing is my only perf mod to date. Definitely difference also in exhaust note, somewhat deeper sound.
2) Are there any websites that provide the install procedures, time and tools?
Yes, I followed instructions at http://www.c5foru m.com/diy/donaldson.php
( the above url is changed automatically - take out spaces - I hate this feature!))

The Screen is still installed on all 2002 coupe and verts not Z06. The maf ends are still metal as well. THe Z06 is the only one with no screen and a plastic Maf. I installed the blackwing 1000 miles ago on my 02 coupe didnt seem to increase hp until I installed the vortex power duct last week. big difference now pulls harder in every gear. I have never dynoed the car though. just my .02
Can you give me some opinions on the vortex ram air system? That seems to be the best bang for the $$ as far as HP goes. thanks for any and all help,

fyi... I removed a few posts from a member with 2 or 3 posts. He was promoting a non-supporting vendor. Please remember that we can't allow a bunch of links to non-supporting vendors. Especially from an unknown member. Many times it ends up being the non-supporting vendor himself that is doing the promotion.
Guys,
I put my Blackwing on this weekend also. I left the battery disconnected
for the 1/2 hour it took me to install the unit. I also drained the oil at the
same time. When I re-started with the battery re-connected, the car ran
great. Although I have only driven my car 300 miles prior to the install,
I do not remember it chirping 2nd gear rubber on a 30 mph downshift.
Now it chirps every time......
I was also very impressed with the look of it. It looks factory stock to me,
especially with the flags embossed in the top of the unit.
I wish the oil change had gone better. I only needed 6 quarts to re-fill the
system. I have to find a way to jack the back of the car next time while I change the oil. I will have that figured out by this fall when I change it again.
I dyno'd my car stock then put on the blackwing and dyno'd again. i picked up 15rwhp without even giving the computer the neccesary 150 miles or so to adjust to the new filter. Also a gain was seen across the entire rpm range. Hope this helps some. BTW it was dynojet dyno.
