100 is correct but tighten them in series like... 35, 70 then 100. It prevents warping of the rotors :yesnod:

Well that is right but it becomes unnecessary after you do one wheel cause you quickly learn what 30,60, 80 is like and you do not really need to be accutare till the end and here is the rub: Good torque wenches (not the bar that bends with a needle pointing to a gauge) require about 20 minutes when going from a high setting to a low setting to adjust for an accurate reading. So I just set mine to 100 and hand tighten each lug in a star pattern getting a little tighter each time until it is time to put a torque wench on. Works very well. When you are done, remember to turn the torque back to a lower setting for storage. :smash: :smash:     :yesnod: :seeya

but what if....

I just put on a set of chrome Z06 wheels and the new chrome lugs fit into the wheels where I can't get the torque wrench on them without an extension.

I would think that the extension affects the force, does it?

Is 100 ft. lbs the same with a short extension?

As long as the extension is just a straight shaft, it will not alter the reading. Just use the shortest one possible as it is easier to handle. :yesnod:  :seeya

I thought it was 50 - 75 - 100 Just don't go ZERO to ONE HUNDRED. Bad things could happen.

BTW I just learned this technique this weekend when I removed my wheels to paint my calipers and install the side fender vent screens. Makes sense to me now.

You can go as long as you want with an extension "straight out" and it will not effect the torque. If you extend the length with a crows foot or some other means you are changing the torque.

A straight extension can cause erratic torque values (with the tolerances in the parts - square holes in the extension and socket and the socket itself - things can misalign slightly and create a small moment arm; this gives more torque on the nut than what the wrench indicates). The longer the extension, the greater the "error". To avoid this, use (as others have said) as short an extension as possible and use two hands on the torque wrench. Place one hand at the ratchet end to lightly support the wrench and hold things straight on the nut; use the other hand on the handle (like normal) and torque SLOWLY until the wrench "clicks".

In the industry that I work in we torque bolts everyday. I have never in my 15 years heard of:

"Takes a period of time for the torque wrench to change after you adjust the setting"

Based on the manual that came with both my Craftman torque wrenches, it clearly states that when you go from a high setting to a low setting, it takes time for the wrench to adjust to the lower setting. It claims 20 min as the time necessary to keep the wrench accurate. Going from a lower setting to a higher setting is no problem, just twist the handle till you see the higher setting in the window and tighten the fastner. It also states to store the wrench at a setting at no higher than 25% of max rating on the wrench. :smash: :smash: :yesnod:  :seeya

AFVETTE, what color is your paint? I tried to buy yellow paint from CAU to paint my calipers, but they said thet don't sell yellow paint any more. Assuming your paint is yellow, and you didn't get from CAU, would you mind telling me where? Thanks

http://www.torquerepair.com/tips.htm

"Clicker" style torque wrenches should always be turned down and stored at the torque wrenches lowest possible setting.

We always set ours to "0" or the lowest setting when they are not in use.

What about getting it calibrated?
http://www.torquerepair.com/repair.htm

"Torque Wrench Conditions
All torque wrenches fall into different categories based upon our experience and that of the manufacturer. The actual click from a torque wrench is considered a "cycle"
of that wrench. Most manufacturers recommend basic calibration after 8000 to 12000 cycles.
For most customers, this means calibration every 8 to12 months."

For me and you in the garage we should be alright for more than a few years. I'm lucky enough to have my calibrated at work once a year.

i know the manual says 100 lbs, but we always went with 80 lbs when racing. of course we checked them after every run. just never saw the point in going to 100. made it easier to get the wheels off too. never had a wheel fall off so far.
