Default Thermostat change time

Hi Guys

I'm changing my therm soon and wondered if any of you have had trouble with after market thermosats, should I stay with GM parts and what temperature therm should I get? If I go with the 180 degree I know I should reprogram the PCM for the full affect.

Thanks Ron

Hi, I changed mine last month along with a radiator change for a leak in plastic side tank. I used one (stock temp) from auto zone with no problems.

What do you consider a hot ride?
If the stat is ok via a simple test why replace it?
Just throw it in some water with a meat thermometer , ( which is something you should do with a New stat as well ) as it approaches the designed setting you should be able to note its opening. The New antifreeze is a good idea.. 2 gallons of antifreeze is nothing. I know guys with 200,000 miles on their C5 with the same original stat. I am not trying to talk you out of anything.. Many people like to change things just for the sake of change.

180 is the factory temp, so you shouldnt need to reprogram anything.

Default 180 factory therm

Hi Guys

I removed the them today and I'm pretty sure it is the factory unit, it has 100c on it, checking my conversion tables that would be 212F. Now the question is does GM sell a 180F therm or do I need to buy an after market therm.
There is a big price difference between the two.

Your stock thermostat is easily modified to open at lower temps and the total cost is about $1. Why spend all that money.

Default Them change

I like to save money like the next guy but with something so important and aftermarket therms are only about $35 bucks why not go for the reliablity. How do you modify a therm, and then make sure it opens where you want it to, that sounds like a little testing and adjusting to get it right.

Here you go, I ended up using the thinnest shim and mine opens at a little less then 180. If I ever take it out again I plan to reduce the shim to 0.050". Link

Default Thanks for all the great info

Thanks for the info. now I'm thinking I really should test mine and change the therm as you discrib. did you notice any reduced mileage with the lower temp. I'm thinking of a manual fan operation also, I want to turn on fans when I want to.

thanks Ron

Hard to tell, I did it with a head/cam installation so mileage wasn't much of a concern.

check that your low speed (drivers) fan is not broken.

reach into the fan shroud on a cold engine and try to spin the blades.

Default All Done

After checking fan grounds and cleaning them up as they measured 2 ohms of resistance, checking the thermostat several times and refilling with new Dex Cool everything seems fine.
I was thinking of buying a new therm but found most where made in China, Mexico or other foriegn countrys I decided to stay with the original as it works fine and is 7years old and might be made in the USA.
It sure bugs me that so much stuff is made some where else, I purchased a Bra for the vette and it was made in China and doesn't fit that great.

Owe well the car cooling system seems fine so that's good, Ron

One nice thing about modding the GM stat, it is quickly un-modded as well and the quality is very good.
