Default A couple Head/cam questions

I am planning on doing heads and cam on my car this winter. I have done alot of research and picked out a few items for the build:

Cam:g5x3
Heads: aluminum 6L truck heads casting 317. (most likely going to mill them a little)
Going to do lifters (not sure which ones. sugestions?)
push rods
new head bolts
Most likely a new oil pump since im in there
Dont know if i should go for a new harmonic balancer
And LTs and mid pipe (not sure catted or O/R?)

My main question is with this set up will i have to worry about valve to piston clearance?
How much should i mill the heads (.015" or more?)
port and polish the heads?
What kind of power gains could i possibly see?
Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the help
Steve

Why 6 liter heads? You're better off with ls6 heads. With even a mild set of heads and X3 you should easily see 70rwhp. You should do an UD pulley while you're in there, injectors are a must, and LS2 timing chain.

You planning on adding boost? Wondering why you chose the 317 heads. They will lower your compression unless you mill them ALOT, which is less power all else being equal.

This is the build I just did. My '03 LS1 had the LS6 intake. I added stock 243 heads, dual springs, Harland Sharp roller rockers, LS7 lifters, WPE custom cam 224/230 .585/.592 113 LSA, LS2 timing gears, hi-volume/hi-pressure oil pump.

I'm very pleased with it. Mustang Dynoed at 416 rwhp, 392 rwtq.

I'm doing the same to my 98. I have a set of 243 heads getting worked on. I already installed an LS6 intake manifold. I have the same questions as the op, but don't want to threadjack. Please post up in my thread. It would be most appreciated.

Best is to ask the cam manufacturer or seller if there will be a clearance issue--I don't think there will be
And i agree the 317 hds won't flow as well as the 243 hds will--especially with a bigger cam--and the comp ratio will be higher --around 10.75 rite out of the box with the 243's so they would be a better choice--
Deff. get a UD pulley when doing the cam/hds---
ALSO you deff will need a tune --especially with the
LT's
I assume you have a CAI and cat-back
NEW oil pump YES
TR-55 plugs and better wires
Professionally ported T-Body
check push rod geometry
Do a " cam positiion relearn procedure"
GM head bolts are fine
use the GM graphite type head gaskets when not resurfacing the block(they seal better)
you'll need appropriate valve springs( more important than lifters ) IMO
Better rocker arms--shaft style--yella terra etc--
