I searched but could not find, is there any hp gain to speak of by installing exhaust cut outs on a mostly stock c5 for occasional 1/4 mile runs? I was thinking that might be the best way of freeing up exhaust when needed then stock exh. during normal driving. thanks for anyone who has done this...
I did that on my '96 Camaro, and it worked out fairly well. However, on the C5s there are so many aftermarket hi-flow muffler replacements that are essentially "straight thru". Therefore, you can get much improvement on the sound without being too loud, as well as a boost in overall performance. Probably the better way to go. Good Luck!
Assuming a stock exhaust, if you install cut outs in front of the cats in order to bypass all exhaust restrictions it will yield hp gains. I couldn't tell you how much, as that what a dyno is for.
It is the exact same principle as a free flowing muffler.
Now, that all being said, the cut outs are a quick and cheap way to unleash some ponies. But if you have the green then you would want a long tube header set-up with 4 into 2 into 1 collectors and an X-pipe (as opposed to an H-pipe) followed by a well designed muffler (a straight through type with spiral core works well). The collector design will provide a "scavenging" effect, and the spiral core is thought to increase flow (marginally) by means of increasing velocity.
I can feel the extra TQ i get with mine, but I do have a 416 stroker..with no cats and Ti's with the mod pipe in them. Its nice to have a car that sounds like a C6R

opening up the exhaustwill change the air fuel ratio you might need a retune to take advantage of that mod or if it falls into the envelope that the computer operates your car will need some driving for the computer to "learn" and adjust 50 street miles or 5 passes down the 1/4(if memory serves me correct)
vglnte 1 My goodness that thing hauls, it sounds awesome, and man you can catch them gears, thanks for replies guys, this place is great, I think I may go with corsa if not much difference in hp, and I think cuts out will probably be to loud on street anyways. Tom
I almost went with cutouts and with the setup I have they would have been way to loud. I do have Corsa Pace cars which I love, loud when you want and quiet when you need them to be. If I were you I would do mufflers then if you want louder try cutouts or headers

I just keep them open now, even on the street. at first it was to much, but I just love the sound. After a few hours I even get a headache, but dont care. you know the old saying....if its to loud then your to........
