I am the owner of a 2000 hatchback. About two weeks ago, I noticed a high pitched whine coming from the rear of the car when I stepped on the gas and the car was in gear. The noise was more pronounced in higher gears (5th and 6th), and it got louder as I picked up speed. I brought it in to a local mechanic and he says the transmission needs to be replaced. I have only 37,000 miles on the car. How can this be possible? Has anyone else out there experienced similar problems? I loved this car since the day I bought it, but now I'm furious with this issue and am thinking about selling it after it gets fixed.
My 01 M6 makes a similar sound from the transmission area too.
It occurs when I start it up and am backing out of my garage. It makes the noise in neutral and in gear. It is not all the time that I know of. And it is not loud enough to tell if it happens at highway speed.
Not sure. I've bought the car with 25,000 miles on it and put about 11,000 on it in two years. The fluid was not changed within that time period. What is the recommended change interval?

Well, I did think it was that the first time I heard it, but the fuel pump makes a completly different sound.
It's a very odd sound and I just can't think of what parts are movingthat would cause it. Oh well, I'll just wait til it goes BOOM and then I'll have a project
Mine only made the noise in gear, not at idle or in neutral. I never noticed it in reverse, but it was at its loudest on the highway at 70-80 mph.
Yeah, I'd say your issue is different than mine then.
Well, did the tranny guy say 'what' was bad in the transmission? If he can't tell ya then don't trust him. And always ask for the broken or replaced items to be returned to you after any repair so you can verify the damage.
Ok, but that's not what you stated. I was just trying to understand why the transmission is not a possibility.
you know your right....i wouldnt know. My statement is off of what i see and hear basis...not the best. no need goin there. Im just simply telling him from the little experience i have to start with the diff before over thinking its the transmission. My wording was wrong. My bad.
I have seen both transmissions AND differentials make noise but 90% of the time it's the diff. Over time the backlash on the ring and pinion gears increase and the noise starts. The noise will only get louder over time.
When you drain the diff fluid, look closely. The fluid might have a lot of metal particles in it (or gray in color).
If the trans is noisy, it's usually the trans was overheated or ran low on fluid or both.
This is a pinion gear out of a noisy diff. Take a close look, the gears lost alot of material.
I would bet on the differential also...maybe the pinon bearing? I have owned other cars in the past and the pinion bearing has gone bad and the noise was as you describe. Doesn't sound like a transmission problem.
