Default [Another] Spark Plug Thread

Hi folks,

I've spent the past hour doing a search for this information but have come up empty. Can someone tell me what the torque should be on the spark plugs?

Also, I have the NGK TR55 plugs. What should the gap be? I've seen threads stating that I should leave the factory gap on them and I've seen threads stating that it should be reduced based on HP.

I've got about 390 RWHP with the following mods:

Kooks long tube headers
LG Motorsports G5X3 114 lsa cam kit
Roll Master double roller timing chain
ASP Under drive pulley kit
160 degree thermostat
Comp Cams 921 spring kit
Ported oil pump
Z06 Ti exhaust
X-Pipe
High Flow Cats
Cowl induction hood feeding a cut stock airbox.

Thank you and sorry for any repeat questions on the forum.

You want to change the plugs when the engine is COLD.

Don't need to torque the plugs down(7-9 lbft) Just use a 3/8 "rachet and have your palm close to the socket, not at the end of the handle.

You have to be more worried about over torqueing, not under.

Put anti seize on the thread of the plug.

Use an old plug boot to start the new plug into hole.

You will have to do a search in regards to the gap of your particular plug & HP of engine. Off the top of my head I'm thinking around 55 -60, but don't take my word!

Put plenty of dieelectric grease into both ends of the wires.
Good luck.

Direct from the 2001 shop manual, page 6-167...

Brand new plugs....15 ft/lbs
Any subsequent re-torquing of the same plug...11 ft/lbs

Since you're tightening into an aluminum engine, I strongly suggest using a torque wrench, both for accuracy, as well as eliminating any risk of damaging any threads. Use anti-seize, do the job when the car is cold, and be patient.

Thanks so much for the help. Got all of them changed out. Lots of dielectric grease, a little anti-seize, and I left the gap at .055. That's what the gap was on the plugs I pulled out. I am the third owner of this car and I thought the plugs had never been changed. Apparently I was wrong. They were changed out with NGK TR55 plugs already and they actually looked really good. The car has 48k on it and I know the 2nd owner never changed them. Oh well, at least I now know they have been changed. I changed the wires out too.

Car runs good.
