Hi I have a question on a problem I am having.
97 C5 M6 about 42K
Every once in awhile when I start the car and put it in first gear the car will die and I get a message pull key and wait ten seconds. When I put the back in after ten seconds and the car runs fine. I did some research and had a new ignition key made but the problem still happens once in awhile. Sometimes it seems I can go a month or two and not have this problem and other times it happens 2-3 times a month.
Is the problem I having caused by a bad ignition switch and would installing a new one solve this problem?
The IGNITION SWITCH its self is NOT the issue. The key chip sensor on front of the ignition switch (silver can) is used to read the resistor chip on the key. If the sensor contacts fingers inside the sensor are dirty or worn, you will have this issue.
Spray some contact cleaner (doesnt take much) inside the sensor and see if it resolves the issue.

Bill thanks for the reply, I had a brand new key made about two -three months ago. So Bill is what you are saying even with a new key this can still happen every once in awhile and this is normal thing that happens from touching the key resistor chip with your hands/fingers and I have to clean it every once in awhile even though its a brand new key?

Its not the key. Its the sensor in the ignition switch that reads the resistance thats probably dirty. Just spray a little contact cleaner in the slot where the key goes.

Ok got it, I will try that I thought Bill meant the sensor on the key.

Thanks guys
The black "Pellet" on the key is a simple resistor. The contacts in the ignition switch touch the metal tabs on each side of that resistor, the reading of that resistance is where things are going bad.
Hi and thanks, I just went though DIC the codes that come are below.
U160H
U1016H
The column lock I believe is disabled because I can turn the wheels when the key is out and I do hear a noise at times from the column (trying to engage but can't because it was disabled right ?) if any of this helps or matters.

You probably had the dealer fix which is know to fail, the only permanent fix is to get a CLB which replicates the signal that the column lock sends.

If you had the recall done and you don't hear the "noise", that is the motor that is failing which the K harness leaves in the loop. The CLB eliminates the lock motor, thus, no more problem, unless your battery falls below the 12.5 volts.
Buy the CLB, spend 30 minutes and install it and save a long walk home. The best $50 I have spent on my 98 yet!
