Yes you can. It's been a while since I've done it. I tore the boot on that side a while back and had to pull the half shaft out to fix it. I don't remember it being anything really difficult. I had to take swing the spindle assy out of the way and it comes out by simply prying it out. The nut holding the shaft into the spindle was something I had to buy at the local parts store since it was so big. I think it was a 32mm.

Are you talking about the short differential shaft coming out of the differential on the drivers side?
Or Are you talking about the axle shaft that goes from the wheel hub to the differential with rubber boots, at each end ?

You will have to pull your diff to replace the shaft.

I broke my output shaft a couple months ago and I removed the differential from the car. You will also want to check the clutches and the bevel washers in there. They have a tendence to break. I replaced my output shaft with a c6 zo6 shaft. It fit without any issues and is much stronger(its a fraction of the price of hardened)
