Yes you can. It's been a while since I've done it. I tore the boot on that side a while back and had to pull the half shaft out to fix it. I don't remember it being anything really difficult. I had to take swing the spindle assy out of the way and it comes out by simply prying it out. The nut holding the shaft into the spindle was something I had to buy at the local parts store since it was so big. I think it was a 32mm.
I broke my output shaft a couple months ago and I removed the differential from the car. You will also want to check the clutches and the bevel washers in there. They have a tendence to break. I replaced my output shaft with a c6 zo6 shaft. It fit without any issues and is much stronger(its a fraction of the price of hardened)
