Default Tranny fluid change question

My 02 has about 70K miles on it and I feel the tranny fluid is due for a change. I know that when a fluid change and filter are done only a portion of the fluid is refreshed leaving a lot of old fluid behind. A power purge is the only way to change all of the fluid but I have heard that going that route can cause problems. I spoke to my service advisor at the dealer and he recommends just a fluid drop and filter change, not the power purge. Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what the best route to go is. My tranny is an A4 and is working perfectly. I just want it to stay that way. Thanks for any advice you can share.

I personally would recommend having the transmission checked out properly! If you are not having any problems and it all check out good. Then have the pan and filter pulled & inspected. If that checks out good, I would change the Filter & Gasket. Reinstall the pan a do a full fluid exchange with Dex IV and Lubegard Red! Maintenance done correctly will not cause a problem but if there is an existing problem it can bring it the surface!

Last time I checked, there wasn't a procedure in the service manual for a power flush/purge, etc. What you have "heard" is correct, many experience problems after a power flush. Sounds like your service advisor is recommending exactly what the manual calls for.....sounds simple to me.....or did I miss something in the question?

Thanks for your input, before speaking to my service advisor I thought the only way to service the tranny was to purge all the fluid. The more I ask the more I learn, thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
