I have had a Ripper and now a Hurst. Both of them made more noise than the stock shifter. Some people report NO noise and others report noise. My noise is a rattle that seems to come from the shift **** under hard accelerations. There is also more drive train noise coming through.
Both shifters definitely feel better than the stock shifter. They have a shorter throw and more of a crisp feel when engaging into and out of gear.
Personally the noise bothers me. I do play my stereo enough so that I don't hear it but when it is quiet (which is a relative term in this beast ;) ), the rattle makes me feel like the car/shifter is cheap. I really don't like it when I am driving with a passeger and we are talking. Either way, I will probably try to quiet it down because it is a better shifter functionally.
I put this poll up just to find out how many people find the short shifters noisy.
I also have the Hurst and it makes noise just like the rest of them are reported to. I taped some wheel weights to the shaft which helps but still doesn't cure it fully. More noise will also be introduced from the driveline because the rubber shroud is cut to make the aftermarket ones fit.
All in all I think there are improvements with the shifters but they are noisier.

You will get different answers because of differences in the installation and the **** being used. When we installed my Ripper, we used silicone sealant all around the rubber cover. This plugged up the area where the cover rides high because the Ripper base is higher than the stock base. We also used sealant under the Ripper base. Then, I used wheel weights and rubber hose to dampen the shaft. Lastly, I have the Delrin Hardbar **** - the stock **** or other lightweight **** will make a heap of noise. As a result, there is almost no noise in excess of what you get with the stock shifter. There is some vibration under heavy pedal between 3500 and 4500 rpm, especially if you leave your hand on the **** between shifts, but I seem to recall having some of that with the stock shifter. The MN6 is just not that quiet.
I stuck wheel weights to the shaft of my Ripper and put calk in the cap of the stock **** wich helped but did not eliminate the noise. I ordered a new **** for my Hurst but I will probably put the wheel weights back on it.
I will have to try the rubber hose. I wish someone made a quieting kit for these shifters. I would buy it.

Ain't that the truth. By the way, the rubber hose in my rig goes over the wheel weights. If you want to experiment, you could try just the hose, or the weights over the hose, then tape around the whole thing. Ah, the chance to be creative ;)
I had minimal noise with my Hurst ( stock **** ), I installed a Billet **** & a 3"X 3/4" new heater hose on the shaft, fits very tight. Now I here no noise, but I did both at the same time...so I don't know if hose helped?, or the **** did the trick, anyway..I'm now satisfied :D
So far it looks like a 50/50 split between those that are noisy and those that are not. I wish I knew what the difference is. Are some of just pickier or trying to hear it more than the rest of us? Is there a difference in the installation (aside from putting all of the sound deadening stuff on it). Are some of the shifters just not properly manufactured?
Ears are different just like cars......maybe its all the old farts (I'm getting there......) that can't hear the noise
I just recently put a Kirban in and expected to hear some noise. However, so far, knock on wood, it sounds no different then stock. Maybe my Corsa Indy's and Proflo+ intake hide the noise with their pleasant sounds, I don't know. Those that do hear a noise, is it a winding noise from the transmission or is it some other type of noise that you hear?
My Kirban is still giving me noise. I didn't have the stops adjusted correctly so I had to redo the procedure. The buzzing noise is still there but not all the time, only in certain gears when the REVs climb faster than normal. I find the effort quite high even though I did a gear oil change with Redline products. :flag
1) The rattle. When accelerating HARD, usually at the top of the gear (4000 rpm +) there is a rattling that usually sounds like it is coming from the ****. When I put my hand over the **** I can affect the way it sounds. This is the most annoying noise.
2) General noise. I can hear the "can of marbles" sound louder than with the stock shifter. The shifter/transmission is just slightly louder. I can live with this one. I was just able to hear all kinds of noises depending on whether I was in gear/neutral/clutch in/clutch out.

Turboo2u, did your Kirban come with the round boot plate that is suppose to reduce the noise? I had heard about this plate and asked the folks at Kirban if I could purchase one. They sent it to me free the next day. It is suppose to reduce the noise 70% according to the instructions that came with the boot plate. So far, as I said in my other post, my shifter is just as quiet as it was before I installed it. If you are getting a buzzing sound, does it get reduce by holding the shift ****? If that is the case, it could be the **** has too much play in it. I remember in my younger days of having this buzz being caused by looseness on older 4 speed Hurst shifters. Also, how much play did you leave at the stops? Did you check it for all the gears? I checked mine in each gear. I made sure I still had some play even while placing a little pressure with my hand against the shifter. I used a feeler gauge and made sure it would still easily move while it was in each forward gear. If I applied greater pressure, I could still feel some extra drag on the gauge hence I didn't leave too much clearance.
I went with the silver. It was available now and looks good. Gray woul dhave also been nice but I'm happy. Haven't tried the noise test yet though.........
