Default Oil question....

daughter has 2008 jeep - always had regular oil (30k miles) - tried the synthetic this last time but it is going to be impractical for them to continue using synthetic oil ....can they go back to regular oil??? Seems like it would be ok...
thanks

No problem switching back. But why is it impractical for them? Usually if you figure cost & benefits, synthetics are more cost effective!

....impractical if she maintains the same oil change frequency while paying more for the oil. My concern when extending the oil change interval is whether or not the oil filter can handle extended miles. I change my oil every year (5000 miles) but if you're piling up 12,000 miles per year, you'd better be certain your filter is up to the job.

And as Kevin mentioned, it is certainly okay to go back to regular oil.

Full synthetic is only about 4 dollars more per oil change if you do it yourself and get it on sale at a place like autozone or advance. And I dont even think its that much. But if you take it in to get a full synthetic oil change then yea it is expensive at 60+ but I dont see where, if you do it yourself, it is impractical.

I changed the oil in my 08 Wrangler around 5-6k miles and I usually used Valvoline 10w-30 (non-synthetic). I think I had pushed it to 10-11k miles once and had Mobil 1 I think (I always used either Valvoline or Mobil 1)

Either way, I changed it every 3-4 months. I drove the thing ALOT!!!

The top of the head that was visible was always clean and looked new.

If you want a synthetic oil at a reasonable cost, try Wal-Mart's Supertech full synthetic. (sincere thought, not being funny)

Not sure how much that supertech stuff cost but I know you can get mobile one 5+ quart bottle for about 27$ including filter.

I think Supertech is about $19 for a 5qt jug. Although a penny saved is a penny earned, I do choose to buy Mobil 1. But, Supertech would be a more cost effective choice I suppose.
